Nobody is disputing that. There are two things that everyone seems to have agreed on: (a) Flintoff was better than Watson and (b) Watson is very easy to hate. The question is about their batting.

No, he was clearly better in output too. People can talk about how frustrating or disappointing his career was but it's only disappointing because he was genuinely good. You still have to make 50s and score a lot of runs before people start banging on about how you're underachieving. As a...

S Africa calls for its players to stay

Man Abbott is copping it from all directions. People are questioning his commitment, loyalty and integrity and now he's even being panned for his hair.

Bringing up Watson's tonnes is always going to result in a poor reflection of how good his batting was, in the same way that Flintoff's 5-fors will always paint him as a far worse bowler. Watson had a weird inability to convert hundreds but I don't think there should be any question that he was...

    Cricketing skills that fascinate you

Being able to bowl a carrom ball is a skill I have a great respect for. Tried doing it when I was younger and barely had the strength in my fingers, let alone the dexterity to control it.

S Africa calls for its players to stay

Yeah that may be true but at the same time it seems like a very convenient excuse for why black cricketers are underrepresented. In my opinion, when players are in there mid to late teens you're still looking for raw talent - I wouldn't have thought that the quality of coaching would have such...

S Africa calls for its players to stay

Even with the wider spread these days there is a historical bias towards the 'elite' private schools. Overall, the ~150 international players since readmission have come from 70 schools but something like ~90 players have come from 23 'elite' private schools. It's an interesting topic overall -...

Trigger movements and backlifts AKA Why Joe Root is an aesthetically poor batsman

I tend to agree. The way he crouches so late almost reminds me of a tail ender batting. The ugliness end there though - I think overall he's quite an enjoyable batter to watch.

Only if you think that the quality of a decision is primarily based on the speed at which it is made. I don't have that much of a problem with Cook's captaincy tbh. There is always room for improvement but I don't see it as a critical item in improving England's performances.

How is this a bad move by the ECB? This is a call on the captaincy that will impact the team for the next few years - surely it is better to take all the time needed rather than rushing it because it's a slow news day and people are impatient. Besides, even if Cook does step down its hardly...

S Africa calls for its players to stay

This misses the point. The fact that most test cricketers come from a small group of elite schools is a huge part of the problem - it's not an excuse or justification for why there has been a dearth of black cricketers. That most cricketers come from a small group of schools indicates that...

S Africa calls for its players to stay

Found an article that references the study (just skip to the last few paragraphs). Still can't find the original report through: www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2016-08-28-cricket-cullinans-transformation-comments-are-deeply-flawed-and-misguided/#.WG61PMqnzqA

S Africa calls for its players to stay

It was a study run by Corrie Van Zyl a while ago. I'm struggling to find the report at the moment - this article refers to it in passing: CSA?s search for black cricketers | IOL Edit: a bit more here http://m.sport24.co.za/sport24/Cricket/Incentive-driven-quota-policy-20131012
