    Jack Hobbs vs Garry Sobers

When it comes to tests Hobbs is undisputed second after Bradman. It is tricky to rate Sobers on just his batting ability though, he rarely played just as a batter.

    Jack Hobbs vs Sachin Tendulkar

If you're being sarcastic, Thank you for proving my point and agreeing player pool is incorrect way to rate players. If you're not, at least you're consistent unlike the rest of the Tendulkar fans.

    Jack Hobbs vs Sachin Tendulkar

Bringing your argument to it's logical conclusion, Player pool is higher during Kohli's time than Tendulkar, I guess that makes Kohli better. You should compare players within the conditions they played in and opponents they played against. Not some future parameters.

    Jack Hobbs vs Viv Richards

Hobbs in his 40s is still the best player of the 1920s, especially against pace bowling. This forum greatly underrates him, because of the era he played in, otherwise there is no one better since except Bradman. If we bring ODIs into account (which we should since from mid 80s - mid 00s, they...

    Jack Hobbs vs Viv Richards

In Ashes tests prewar Hobbs averaged around 55, rest were 40 and below.

    Jack Hobbs vs Sachin Tendulkar

This line of argument always support modern players over older ones. Then we might as well not compare them. Besides England has as many if not more cricketers playing in Hobbs' era than now.

    Jack Hobbs vs Sachin Tendulkar

Nah! SA tests are not considered equal to Ashes tests at that time. You cannot use current parameters to judge him. His dominance in ashes tests is pretty clear from 1908 - 1914, only bettered by Bradman since then.

    Jack Hobbs vs Viv Richards

If it is just tests, then this isn't close. Bradman >> Hobbs >> Everyone else Prewar Hobbs is bradmanesque in dominance over his peers. Only Bradman and Hobbs had that over the past 125 years. Postwar he is still arguably the best batter in the world for a decade in his late 30s to mid 40s.

    Jack Hobbs vs Sachin Tendulkar

If it only for tests then yes Bradman and Hobbs are pretty much set at 1 and 2. Both of them have outputs roughly 50 - 60 % better than their great contemporaries, Bradman maintained that throughout his career, for Hobbs it was during the 6 year Pre-War period. But that's not the right way to...

Steve Smith vs Sachin Tendulkar (after 205 innings)

Tendulkar is a better batter than Dravid so I'd expect his stats to be better. But as you said in your other post stats don't tell everything. When it comes to individual series away from home, when Dravid clicked he performed better across the series and that is something Tendulkar lacked...

    Jack Hobbs vs Sachin Tendulkar

If we take ODIs into account yes because they both defined the era they played in. But if it is strictly tests then no.

Steve Smith vs Sachin Tendulkar (after 205 innings)

Yes, he is incredible at hitting a century in a series so if he tours 4 or 5 times he'd get that many hundreds. But not a batter who dominates series away from home. Dravid did it at a better rate despite being not as good a batsman and playing in the same lineup and in fewer series. Funnily...

Steve Smith vs Sachin Tendulkar (after 205 innings)

Yeah probably 07/08 Aus tour I agree. SA tour I wouldn't say great tour. He had a great final test, but Laxman played even brilliant knock in Durban test on a much tougher deck.

Steve Smith vs Sachin Tendulkar (after 205 innings)

He did well in those series but not necessarily the best touring batter. Eng in 2002 Dravid was significantly better. WI 97 Dravid was better.
