Did anyone else feel like punching Manjrekar in the face when he went on and on about how close this game was shaping up to be when the WI were 200 odd for 3 ?

Because theres a golden rule that Afridi can't bat in the middle overs ? He could be a pretty decent batsman if only he applied his mind to the task.

    Time to abolish floodlight cricket?

IMO, the moths troubled the players more than any dew today.

Pick TWO opening Bowlers for the 1966-85 World test XI

Jeez, how about doing some reading before accusing one of 'dismissing his whole career' 8-) ? You're having a rant for the sake of having one. No one is claiming he was a waste of a bowler. Get this into your head. This is all comparative. When there are two bowlers with little separating...

Yeah, sometimes I wonder why the Pakistani team don't force Afridi to just deal in singles for a few overs, prohibit him from scoring a single boundary till so and so over. It seems hard to believe that a player could have absolutely no will power.

Pick TWO opening Bowlers for the 1966-85 World test XI

Well mate, my bringing in batting into the discussion was in the context of batting outside the SC being the subcontinental batsman's equivalent of a non-SC pacer being tested in the SC.

You're missing the point here. All you have in favour of Lillee is potential. But cricket doesnt deal in that. The currency of cricket is performance. Unless one does perform to a decent level he cannot be elevated to the status of someone else who actually did perform. Maybe it's unfair, but...

Pick TWO opening Bowlers for the 1966-85 World test XI

You're clutching at straws here. Lara has scored 1082 runs @ 51.52 in 11 tests in the Sub continent. Perhaps you forgot those two other subcontinental countries that qualify as test nations ? Or are you claiming Murali wasn't enough of a challenge ?

Spinner for 1966-85 World Test XI

Generally I would always include a spinner in any team. But TBH, SA in the 90's didn't need a really good spinner to even beat India in India.

Pick TWO opening Bowlers for the 1966-85 World test XI

Agreed. There certainly is a case for Dravid being the better batsman overseas, even after accounting for the different playing conditions in the 90's and 2000's. @Aussietragic, I know you're running this thing, but the results of the polls aren't iron clad axioms. Democracy has its flaws.

Pick TWO opening Bowlers for the 1966-85 World test XI

A 40+ batting average does not compare to a bowling average of 60. Bowling attacks tin general in the 2000's have been inferior to those of the 90's, and pitches are flatter too. You're comparing a player who had his prime in the 90's with one who who blossomed in the 2000's.

Pick TWO opening Bowlers for the 1966-85 World test XI

As opposed to assuming he would have done well had he played more despite no indications to that effect ? This is so simple, its ridiculous the discussion has gone so far. Player A averages 20 outside the SC. Player B averages 20 outside the SC. Player A averages 20 in the SC. Player B...

This is what seperates Dhoni from Afridi. Dhoni, unlike Afridi actually can build an innings in singles.

Pick TWO opening Bowlers for the 1966-85 World test XI

Yes, they are. Sorry. Was he a great ? Yes. At the level of the others who actually did well in the sub continent ? No. Missing the point completely. 99.94 is so ridiculously ahead of the rest that it merits no argument. Besides, we're not comparing players cross-generational. We're comparing...

Pick TWO opening Bowlers for the 1966-85 World test XI

They've gone on reputation. How many of those do you think have actually seen Lillee bowl live ? You're just covering your base with a statement you have been forced into by your initial argument. The common refrain whenever a sub continental batsman emerges is invariabely, " Lets see how how...
