Smith actually debuted in the lower order against Punter. When the reporter asked him whether Smith will ever bat in the top order, Punter replied no.
Guess Punter's a bit salty that he went on to completely eclipse him after that.

I dont think that is necessarily inconsistent though? 6th best bat he has seen and 25th best bowler can still make someone the very best as an allruonder, no?

I don't think he actually picked that list. It's just a list of players he happened to mention and the media sort of put it together. He rates Smith very highly from all I can remember and does not rate Root all that much

At the end of the day he averages more than Sachin/Lara/Root/Dravid /Ponting and so on. Some of them comfortably so.
Nothing wrong with picking and finding holes but just because you find some doesn't detract from overall achievements.
He's not in the top tier of ATG's but he's ATG nonetheless.
