I really do not see how it's Kumble when Lyon has bowled in substantially tougher home conditions and is also just as good in SC conditions.
Plenty of things in Lyons favour. He bowls after some seriously good pacers. He bowls in the DRS era. He bowls in a weak era for batsman, especially players of spin.

Kumble would look ridiculously good had he been playing the last decade or so

Both have played about as long both in terms of years and matches.

Nah this is just circular reasoning. People will say the same thing about Lyon when comparing him to a spinner 20 years from now. Kumble didn't have to bowl to the crazy good players of spin because they were on his own team. He would only look ridiculously good these days because of meme pitches at home but no one seriously thinks Jadeja is better than Lyon.

I just don't "get" Kumble. The bloke played in the friendliest conditions for spin and averaged 30. His away record is meh as well. He's basically the spin bowling Boucher to me. As far 30 averaging spinners go I'm taking Lyon, Chandra, Gibbs and Bedi all over Kumble.

Yeah not like Lyon has any longevity to speak of

Kumble played for 18 years against Lyon 14.

Honestly, he was very quality at home but really he very much struggled away.

There were plenty of great players of spin in the Sri Lankan, Pak, Aus, WI and teams during Kumbles time.

As for looking at bowling averages, you need to factor in DRS/Hawk Eye as it's been shown to be hugely beneficial to finger spinners. Lyon would probably be averaging closer to 35 without the impact of DRS.

Kumble would average 45 if he played his home games in Australia.
