I said equal or better.
Was decent in the 80s and great in the early 90s (basically a slightly worse version of Gooch).
Gooch is about Crowe level, Wright can be placed with Atherton (37.8 vs 37.7) tho Mike probably got that, Gayle has a very good record for an opener and I don't think one can say Wright is better, maybe close.

Wright struggling more than Gayle is because he either wasn't as good as Gayle or because he played in a tougher era. Either way, it means Chanderpaul had a better support act than Crowe.

What is with all the Gooch wanking recently?
He averages 2.7 less but opens and has a longer career by a long shot so I personally think it's fair, both guys a little inconsistent and peak merchants but regardless.

completely willing to debate this one out though.

are you ****ing kidding me? Chanders is worse than Hussey
Chanderpaul was a lot better than Hussey. Hussey was a brilliant ODI bat though (probably in the top dozen). Hussey was worse than Clarke and Clarke was worse than Chanders. Hussey was about KP/Laxman level.

what a load of ****, Clarke's a level above Shiv, even averages more minus minnow bashing.

Fine player, great peak with a superb 100 in SA when peppered by Morkel, but generally poor away from home.
Clarke's RPI away from home is 35.6 while for Chanders minus Ban it's 37.3, needless to say, I'm not impressed. Clarke was far superior at playing with tail, had a far wider range of gears and was also good at taking the matches away from sides unlike Chanders

Anyway, last year we (CW) voted on test batsmen after some very hard work by L & L.

Re some of these discussions and threads

Crowe was ranked 43rd, Hayden 45th (contemporaries G Smith and Sehwag 30th and 39th respectively), Chanderpaul 49th, Gooch 51st, and Clarke 52nd. Hussey did not make the top 60 which was finished with Gower. Unsurprisingly Bradman was no 1.
