If you lot are going to pretend to be statisticians with checklist anal-sis then I think you need to start understanding not just sample size across career but also series. 4 innings there, 4 innings here etc.

In terms of the eye test, KWs best batting in England wasn't even against them imo. The WTC final was clutch af, even if he scored less runs in the game than his high score in England.

Also Stokes is an awesome player and it's a shame he's being compared to a #3. I don't think they'd ever be competing for one spot in the same side. If it was a draft I think who I'd pick first depends on who is getting taken ahead of me.

We need to judge through aggregates rather than tiny sample sizes. Kane averages 73 at home and 57 away/neutral since the age of 23 in a very hard era while batting mostly at 3. He’s a top 15 bat of all time really

That was Kane's best performance in England and one of his finest hours. Comes to mind when I think of his best moments. 60 at Lords in very tough conditions (2013) was a good knock too.

The thing is, Kane always plays these little 2 test/ 4-5 innings series, surely it can't be a coincidence that he's had so many with middling returns away from home.

Agree that his performance in that final was superb. Was very tough batting conditions too.

No Sutcliffe? Someone would not like this
Who?

This is just mine, so not unilaterally deciding anything

Bradman

Tendulkar / Sobers / Hobbs
Richards
Smith
Lara

Hutton
Gavaskar
Hammond
Chappell
Ponting
Kallis
Pollock
Headley

That's how my top 15 is more of less ranked. The aforementioned are all on that next tier.

Probably forgetting someone but off the top of my head
Thought you’d been saying recently you don’t really actually rate Hobbs but just chuck him in there so people don’t get mad or whatever.

Did my top 15 at the weekend. Strictly Tests so no Pollock and Headley due to sample size.

Bradman
Tendulkar
Sobers
Hobbs
Richards
Hutton
Lara
Smith
Hammond
Gavaskar
Chappell
Sutcliffe
Border
Waugh
Ponting.

If I'm writing a top fifty greatest cricketers OAT list, Pollock and Headley will definitely feature. But strictly in test cricket, think there needs to be a minimum sample. George is particularly unfortunate there because of the lack of tests WI played&then the War.

The draft I did with PEWS changed my valuation and opinion of him. I still don't believe he would thrive in a modern environment as well as Hutton, but he was the greater of the two. Plus your Hutton bashing wore me down, lol.

Ben Stokes' Stats (2016-2020):-
3430 runs @42.345
112 wickets @27.598

It's great, and also includes some clutch innings; but still wouldn't say it "washes" Williamson.
Williamson has scored 3032 runs @52.27 away from home and 4450 runs @72.95 at home since 2014. Stoke's meh record outside 2016-2020 very much covers Williamson's away record.
