Would’ve been really interesting to see what Southee would’ve done if Naseem had slogged a couple more boundaries and left Pakistan needing 6 or 7 more off the last over.

Scorecard

Latham 9/10 another excellent trip to Asia, only let down by his usual 60-80 malaise.
Conway 8/10 three excellent innings and one first baller. Think he’ll be keeping the openers gig for a while.
KW 8/10 great double hundred but he still looks like he’s lacking that old freedom in his stroke play and remains vulnerable outside off stump.
Nicholls 2/10 oof.
Mitchell 6/10 couple of handy contributions, and a vital wicket.
Blundell 9/10 absolutely outstanding with the gloves and the bat. Already has 6 stumping after 15 tests behind the stumps (compared to 8 from 67 for Watling)
Macewell 6/10 urgh he won’t be going away anytime soon. Well done. I guess.
Sodhi 7/10 hugely impressive effort, by far his best return for NZ, even if his flipper still is only a 50:50 chance of landing on the cut strip.
Southee 7/10 solid as a rock in conditions that couldn’t have been less favourable for his bowling.
Ajaz 4/10 big worries for the little guy. Total non-factor on both day 5 victory pushes.
Henry 6/10 good solid effort, bowled a lot better than his figures suggest and helped save a cratering first innings effort with the bat.
Wagner 2/10 looked toothless, time for the great man to call it a day.

A thought on the pitch - so much talk about how it was a road, yet it worked out about right in terms of the frequency of wickets falling? Yeah the tight finish required an NZ declaration, but even then, that was set up by some very dodgy batting during the Blundell/Bracewell partnership, where wickets could have easily tumbled.

Pitch had enough in it, or some slightly loose batting?

I'd give Sodhi more (8, possibly 8.5), but the rest look about right.

Running the rule over NZ players ‘in the mix’:

————

Southee: Captain, ageing bowler, no ticker with bat in hand.

Williamson: Discarded as captain, hope the elbow holds.

Latham: Passed over for captaincy after struggling in England. Loves Hagley.

Conway: Class act bounced back in Pak.

Nicholls: Really struggling.

Wagner: Fading fast.

Patel: Looks to be done.

Sodhi: Head scratcher.

Mitchell: Poor tour. Batting woes to go with catching woes.

Young: Question marks, hanging around.

Blundell: Chips in with bat, tidy with gloves.

Phillips: Makes squads.

Boult: Is he finished?

Bracewell: Hanging around.

Henry: Still hanging around.

Ferguson: Probably won’t play test cricket again.

Sears: Not sighted.

Ravindra: Tried and discarded.

Santner: On the outer.

Brave declaration from southee, allllmost worked. Love it, very positive. Rather lose trying to win vs trying not to lose and being conservative asf. Would still like too see more urgency with the bat so we have more time to eek out all 20 wickets.

Went better than I expected for NZ especially given the state of bowling resources, but the inability to close out both games was all too familiar. And that’s 5 winless series in a row since the WTC final.

Happy with how the team competed and the senior players barring Nicholls led the way, but too many cracks in the test side at the moment.

Mixed feelings about it. Brave declaration alright, but the way NZ went into retreat as soon as Saud was dismissed (116 runs to defend and 4 wickets to get) undid most of the good work and betrayed a lack of confidence to back up the declaration.

Made for a great finish, but had Agha not played a rash shot, NZ would have delayed the new ball even further and likely lost the game. Reacting to opposition on the counter-attack is something the side needs to address.

Home team wants Draw otherwise Saud Shakeel not scores only 32 or so in 115 minutes.my father says NZ not apply properly especially Pakistan were 80/5 at one stage, so Pakistan Escape with 3rd Series Defeat in their home back yard Consecutively.
