Malibongwe had a tough period. Great opportunity but ended so quickly so it is good to see him get an opportunity like this. Also wouldn't mind someone like Andrew Puttick getting a bigger role like he had with SA A. We also keep forgetting that more provinces would allow us to keep more coaches too.
Very much so.

There is very little down-side to going back to a provincial system in SA. It would need to be looked at financially of course. There would probably also be a loss of players on the bottom, but many of those are probably on semi-pro contracts if contracted at all as fringe players.

Upsides:
Would take pressure off quota system and ensure that the best players get to play.
Spread cricket awareness a bit more and also allows for players that do not live in the main areas get a chance to showcase there talents.
Part of point above, is that under the franchise system the traditional paths to franchise and national selection tend to be limited. An unintended exclusivity becomes a part of the structure because administrators/selectors/coaches tend to go with what they know and trust. By allowing for the furthest parts of the country to showcase cricketers can only be good for talent pool.
Possibly allows for a better spread of monies across the country. As Smith has stated the Proteas are the golden goose; franchise don't make much money themselves so maybe spreading the wealth a bit is not a bad thing. Current richer provinces may not like that but I think they need to suck it up.
More spots available for the better coaches and administrators can also only be good.
Through the provinces it would probably be easier to look at and improve the school systems, difficult to do it remotely. I think local development should also be a provincial issue.
I think that provincial cricket would possibly create better local fan support.

I am unsure how much of this is already done through the provinces, but I do think the franchises likely have to much influence and probably take the lions share of the monies, without contributing to the bigger picture, thus leave some of the provinces floundering.

What CSA need to do, is keep a tight financial control on everything. Ensure monies not being wasted and spread well. Financial accountability needs to be very strong.
Marketing of the provincial FC structure must be a top priority.
CSA need to try get sponsors on-board for the provincial competition, and companies need to make an effort to support that.
TV rights, something needs to be done to provide greater access to provincial cricket on TV (even if only the one day etc). SuperSport needs to step up and at least allow things like pitchvision to be available, their lack of support and, monopoly is helping kill cricket interest.

All this will take strong good governance at CSA, and political will. Whether that actually happens in this country we shall have to see.

I'm a big fan of the provincial system. I reckon if we had the old system players like Cohen wouldn't have doubts about where their future lay. I'm suprised SACA is against this proposal. You'd think they'd want players getting opportunities at the top.

I don't think they are totally opposed to it, but it was thrust upon the players without any work really being done or consultation. Thinks like earnings need to be clarified. And some players will lose out.

Hard to argue with any of that. Should email SACA and CSA ? But seriously I think with proper dialogue and sharing of ideas I 100% would go with this.

Would maybe split into 2 groups - North and South ?

Isn't this true for so much. If only people would actually do it.

It will have to be some sort of conference style system. I like the idea of splitting into 3 groups of 4. With the top 2 in each group going into top of conference clash and the other into a second division each year. And I would look at rotating the groups around every year, rather than just keeping it regional. This is probably all a logistical nightmare though.

I'm not so sure about that as for the system to work I think you need to have all the big teams play each other at some point in the season. There may not be a rivalry at the level of Transvaal vs Western Province in the 80s, but not having clashes like that could result in not getting the desired level of interest.

But that's not to say that something couldn't be worked out, like Stephen's conference suggestion. Just stay away from anything that Super Rugby tried...

Bavuma, Second, Phehlukwayo, Paterson and B.Hendricks all released to play franchise cricket starting Monday.

Keegan Petersen will stay with the Proteas to work with Jacques Kallis.

If we make these conferences to complicated how do we measure performance through equal amount of games.

I know it sounds harsh but I would say make the main provinces be in division one (6 of them) and the other 5/6 be in 2nd division. The side that finishes bottom of first division plays the team who finishes top of 2nd division to see if there is a promotion/relegation or is that too harsh ?

For T20 splitting into conferences is easy.

For 50-over cricket I want 11 teams so that you can play the other teams once and you have 5 home games and 5 away games. Not sure if SWD should get a team. Boland, Border & North West are definites for me. Just too much tradition for Northern Cape and Easterns not to get.

The problem here is that then you may as well keep the franchise system. One of the big advantages of going to the provincial system is spreading the cricket around the country. If you end with a system where the best players are being enticed to the the big money provinces, but then sitting on the bench what is the purpose? It just continues to perpetuate the divide that the current system creates. A more inclusive system is needed where the smaller provinces give their players an opportunity to shine without the fear of just being bullied through money.

You right. Think they just have to have 2 groups of 6 then and each team that finishes top play each other in a final.

EP, Boland, Gauteng, Natal, Easterns, Northern Cape

WP, Border, SWD, North West, Northerns, Free State

Something like that.

If you have 3 divisions of 4 it just makes things too complicated.

Fair enough. Logistics needs to be worked out what is affordable and sensible. My suggestion was just trying to create a system where more teams could play against each other.

Zondo has put in a loan request to leave the Dolphins. Clearly issues re: being left out of the Heat team in MSL have contributed to this.

Qeshile out in the 70's again. I wonder how much he has a problem with the new/moving ball? Seems to get out end of the day, after new ball taken a lot.

Lions need 19 runs in their 4th innings chase to extend their lead at the top.

Warriors and Cobras will need to win to keep in touching distance.
