ICC Awards 2007 - Ponting, Jayawardene vie for Captain of the Year

The Sean

Cricketer Of The Year
Going by past events and awards of this nature...
You could argue that Murali's been unlucky not to win the award previously, but Warney hasn't won it either, and there haven't been too many arguments with the previous winners - Dravid, Kallis/Flintoff (tied) and Ponting. TBH, we're probably due a bowler to win though there are several guys all with legitimate claims on the award.

In the first awards Murali was snubbed, where he was shortlisted as one of the 4 candidates for test player of the year, yet wasn't named in the best Test XI, with Warne getting the nod.

Just made no sense.

I didn't remember that happening actually - was Warne shortlisted for one of the Test players of the year as well?

Cricketer Of The Year
And made neither. You're right mate - makes no sense at all. Would be interested to see the reasonings behind it. Particularly given that Warne spent half that awards period serving his ban!

I really can't see how Shaun Tait gets rated ahead of Bopara or Ross Taylor to be honest.

His economy rate is a shocker at 5.54

28 wickets in 15 ODIs at average of 24.46 - seven of those wickets against Scotland,Ireland, Netherlands, Bangladesh .
Against Scotland 8 overs 2/45 at an economy rate of 5.62 ( in a low scoring game where scotland made just 131 chasing 355), against Bangladesh (where Bang just made 104) 4 overs 1/28, etc..etc.. and the number of times he has given away runs at 7 or 8 an over are too numerous.

Ross Taylor 24 ODIs at 33.61 batting average 2 ODI hundreds and 3 50s, really ranks far ahead TBH.

Yousuf really broke Vivs record of runs in a calendar year and thoroughly deserving, but one suspects Ponting will get it regardless...

I think Tait would get the emerging player of the year award, he might be expensive but he definitely performed and made a solid impact at the biggest stage of them all the WC.

But Taylor made little impact in the World Cup, aside from a score against the Kenyans, he averaged below 20. At least Tait contributed with vitals wickets against the test nations.

Does someone have the stats for the period under review? How many of Yousuf's record run tally and Murali's near-record wicket tally are included?

Given Murali's Test performances in the first half of this calendar year as well I'd lean toward him as Test player of the year, ahead of Yousuf and Punter.

Ponting's ODI performances may push him over the top when it comes to the overall cricketer of the year though.

Before the world cup Taylor was playing brilliantly, if he had continued that form or even half of it into the WC I think he would be the pick for emerging player, but its Tait for me. Taylor fell away.

New Zealand - not after the Murali run out.
