It only seems like yesterday that CW travelled to Leeds and lost in the County Championship, well they had the chance of revenge as the guy in charge of the fixtures must have been friends with Graham Wagg. After being held up at the border for 13 hours the Yorkshire team were finally allowed through and it was anger at the ‘mishap’ that probably inspired them here. Missing 4 key players on international duty couldn’t help CW and Nathan Hoy was selected for his first class debut. Hoy arrived on the day to fall victim to the inevitable first game pranks. Someone dyed his whites pink and of course there was glue in his box.

Yorkshire won the toss and decided to bat on a lovely day, which contrasted with the pile of **** weather CW had to put up with in the away match. Wood and Mcgrath got to lunch without losing a wicket and CW looked in trouble. The opening partnership passed a hundred bfore 4 quick wickets brought the game back onto an even keel. Hall took 2. Lumb Fellows and Wise put on decent scores but Halsey and Thomas took 7 between them to bowl Yorks out for 266.

CW’s reply was poor, Eclipse and Bennett leaving early along with Blewy. Hoy on debut scored a composed half century but when he went no one else contributed well. Gray Kearsley and Age Master all got in only to throw their wickets away. CW were all out for 210. 54 behind.

A second wicket partnership of 136 put he game firmly in Yorks favour and a sixth wicket stand of 140 from Wise and Centurian Richardson rammed the advantage home. The tail was cleaned up quickly but 343 all out meant 398 to win. Thomas took 5 for on his return from injury.

Eclipse and Blewy briefly threatened to make a game of it but from 131-1 the wickets tumbled and we weren’t helped by an injury to Jamee Gray. None of the lower order could contribute and they fell away to 243 all out and a very disappointing loss. Unless a change around occurs CW will be fighting relegation.

You were rested because your fitness was low.

The lads like to have a bet like anyone else and there’s currently a book going round on the Nat West Trophy. Despite the involvement of 4 CW players in the side there seems to be a surprising lack of money on England, infact no one has bet on them. An undisclosed source said “ England are no hopers, especially since they picked Richards and Vimes, they might aswell have picked Anthony Mcgrath and Vikram Solanki.”

The next match was away at Old Trafford. With the all rounders from CW selected, the bulky Flintoff was available for Lancashire. The web cared not. Paucity of form and players availability mean CW went in to the game with 4 openers, 2 wicketkeepers and 5 bowlers, they won the toss and batted first. It nearly backfired as only 2 players got many runs, however Sean Bennett and Scott Craze put on 144 for the 4th wicket and Bennett cracked a lovely century. The highlight of the innings had to be Pickup smashing Flintoff back over his head for 4 in the last over though.

In reply Mr Wright picked up early wickets before Neil Pickup and Ton Halsey came on to finish them off. A great return to the side for Pickup taking 4 for, but Bennett won the man of the match.

Afterwards the players went to the bar to catch the England one dayer and saw Vimes crack 92* as England won by 10 wickets. Malone bowled 10-2-31-2 whilst Cloete was not required to bat or bowl. Richards was dropped.

Really good to come back from such a long lay-off, and especially good to pick up some wickets.

Good win boys.

After the recent weeks of underachievement it was important that Cricket Web got their season going again when they travelled to Chelmsford to take on Essex in the county championship. The recent recovery of the pace duo, Mr Wright and Patrick Nath had given the side a boost but it was tempered by the loss of wicketkeeper Gray for a month with a dogdy wrist. Luckily for CW the recent drugs tests had all come back negative, though quite a few of the players were very relieved. The team travelled to Essex with anticipation and trepidation, rumours about the local female populations welcoming nature were contrasted by the tales of ‘pikeys’ and other such uncivilised characters. The web were a bit reluctant to leave the dressing room on the morning of the match and resolved to take all their valuables onto the field with them to prevent the light fingered locals getting their hands on them.

The toss was won by Essex and they batted first, a bright start had seemed to be halted by Nath taking 3 wickets to reduce them to 134-4. But Nasses Hussain scored a half century to keep Essex in it but at 260-7 and with Halsey just having taken 2 in 2 they were hoping to skittle them for under 300. But Clinton had other ideas and he formed 3 decent partnerships with the tail. Completed a century and saw Essex to 425.

CW couldn’t have begun their replay much better, ‘Steds’ Bennett and Eclipse put on 203 for the first wicket, the latter scoring a century, whilst the former was 6 runs short of a maiden FC century. The innings didn’t really kick on from there though and they reached 330-5 before Age Master took control, receiving great support from Wright, Nath and Thomas he pounded a century to leave CW all out for 581 and in with a chance of victory.

Whilst wickets didn’t fall all that regularly, at 5 down with only a small lead the CW boys still scented victory but Ronnie Irani’s 81 saw Essex out of trouble and enabled them to decalre in the evening session, CW duly played out the draw. Not a win but at least it wasn’t a defeat.

Bob Dylan once sang “The times they are a changin’” - The CW players had the chance to exercize their vocal cords on this away trip as a puncture to the coach produced an impromptu bootleg version, “The tyre it needs a changin’” As the stricken coach lay on the hard shoulder more songs were murdered including ‘Blame it on the Blewy’ and the popular terrace chant “The Closest thing to Crazey”

“This is the nearest place to Crazey we have ever been
He was 17 now he’s 83
This is the closest thing to Crazey we have ever known
Its all down to Crazey, on his own”

Needs a bit of work.

Anyway the puncture was mended and we were on our way to the ground. Having won the toss, the bat first option was decided upon and Sean Bennett continued on his merry form from the last match, adding 99 runs and assisted by the Crazey man himself with 66 not out and decent contributions from Jellett and Ferd CW managed 273-4 from 45.

Somerset allways looked more interested in the lunchtime refreshments than the match and it was no surprise when they were in immediate trouble, a run out at a four wicket burst from MOM Mr Wright started the rot, Halsey, Hall and Pickup cleaned the rest up and the large victory was ours.
