Made to run down 301 runs for victory, the CW XI needed someone to inspire the chase. Early wickets saw the score at 37/2 and Cloete joined by Tamara. Overall Cloete smoked 8 fours and 2 sixes in classing his way to 82 from 64 balls until playing on to Wavell Hinds. The CW XI ultimately won by 1 wicket with 11 balls to spare.

Under the scrutiny of all the world, Cloete finally made his mark in ODI cricket in the opening match of the 2004 World Cup in the West Indies. The innings helped win the match for the CW XI and earned the Man of the Match award.
