Disappointing. Everyone wanted the all-CW Land final other than those poxy Yanks. Mustardo and myself will be hoping to exact revenge on behalf of Drake & Korpinen and the dashed hopes of the CWLand faithful in the final.

We should have a play-off with Drake & Korpinen to decide who will make the Davis Cup team. Would be massive.

Disappointing to lose, but reasonably happy with a competitive showing against a top 50 opponent. :)

Quarter Finals - Szczecin (Poland)

Men's Singles (Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's Doubles (Draw)
  • Arguably the four best players will do battle in the semifinals of the Pekao Open as the quarterfinals went largely according to what was expected in Szczecin. In the day's closest match, the Czech Republic's Petr Brožik was beaten by second seeded Belgian Yves Parmentier 7-6(0), 6-3. Parmentier does battle with Puerto Rico's Domingo Gutiérrez Gómez who continued his return from a knee injury with a 6-4, 6-0 thumping of local Radaslaw Marzec.

  • Seeded players out:
    Fernando Aguero;
    Michael De Kinsele.
  • Gurpreet Rao & Suryakant Singh are through to the semifinals of the doubles draw after they decimated second seeds Ivo Nikolić & Vilmos Petričević. The Croats offered little as Rao and Singh dominated proceedings with a comfortable 6-2, 6-0 win. They face third seeds Juan Manuel Cortés and Javier Villaneuva in the semifinal on Saturday.

  • Seeded players out:
    Ivo Nikolić &

PEOPLenet Cup
Quarter Finals - Dnepropetrovsk (Ukraine)

Men's Singles (Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's Doubles (Draw)
  • In Dnepropetrovsk, Randy Banks fell just short of causing an upset against second seed Viktor Vuriak in his quarterfinal. Vuriak, ranked No. 56 in the world and in his home country, was made to fight hard against the man ranked some 273 places lower than him. But Banks was not able to best the Ukrainian at the cruicial moments; Vuriak surviving a real scare to set up a semifinal against Jordan Mutch 7-6(5), 7-5.

  • Seeded players out:
    Ivars Emsis;
    Pat Hewitt.
  • Banks and Matt Bre were unable to make inroads in the doubles as they were beaten by third seeds Ivars Emsis & Sam Lazzeri. Latvia's Emsis made up for his disappointing performance in the singles the day before as he dropped just four points on service throughout the match, and essentially proved the difference between the two as he fired down ten aces by himself. Banks and Bre scrapped for all they could, but were overwhelmed by the American-Latvian combination who advanced 7-6(2), 6-4.

  • Seeded players out: None.

Semi Finals - Szczecin (Poland)

Men's Singles (Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's Doubles (Draw)
  • Highly rated Belgian youngster Yves Parmentier will contest his maiden Challenger final on Sunday after defeating fifth seed Domingo Gutiérrez Gómez in straight sets. The second seed welcomed his change in fortunes; the mid-season slump that saw him fall to No. 74 in the world seemingly arrested as he secured a 6-2, 7-5 win. He plays Challenger king Javier Villaneuva in the final after the top seed beat Dane Kasper Buur 7-5, 6-2. The Spaniard has claimed two Challenger titles this season, and holds a 23-3 record at this level.

  • Seeded players out:
    Kasper Buur;
    Domingo Gutiérrez Gómez.
  • Gurpreet Rao & Suryakant Singh will contest their first final as a team in Szczecin after coming from a set down to beat Juan Manuel Cortés & Javier Villaneuva. The CWLand-Indian pair dropped the first set 3-6, but fought back well to win through to Sunday's final 3-6, 7-5, 10-7. They face local pair Dariusz & Radaslaw Marzec who proved too good for wildcard entrants Domingo Gutiérrez Gómez and Aleksandr Stepien.

  • Seeded players out:
    Juan Manuel Cortés &
    Javier Villaneuva.
PEOPLenet Cup
Semi Finals - Dnepropetrovsk (Ukraine)

Men's Singles (Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's Doubles (Draw)

  • Experienced Fin Lari Färkkilä will be up against a parochial Dnepropetrovsk crowd in Sunday's final after he booked a showdown with second seed Viktor Vuriak. In a brutal affair lasting nearly three hours, Färkkilä ousted top seed Atthaphol Sae-ul in a come-from-behind 4-6, 7-6(1), 7-6(2) win. Vuriak meanwhile had no troubles in beating surprise packet Jordan Mutch 6-0, 7-5.

  • Seeded players out:
    Atthaphol Sae-ul.
  • The top two seeds will do battle in the doubles final with wildcard entrants and top seeds Gai Kai & Lu Xun to face second seeds Ritwik Bhutia & Harpreet Gupte. Gai and Lu came from a set down to beat fourth seeds Matthias Müller & Tim Zander, whilst the Indian team covered third seeds Ivars Emsis & Sam Lazzeri in straight sets.

  • Seeded players out:
    Ivars Emsis &
    Sam Lazzeri;
    Matthias Müller &
    Tim Zander.

Poor end for Drake. Should ride one horse.

Mostly good week for CW, though - not bad to have one quarter-finalist in an extra-strength challenger week.

Miami - 1R (Navarro)
Monte Carlo - DNP
Madrid - 3R (Smeltz)
Rome - DNP
Montréal - 1R (Olesen)
Clowich - 1R (Orlov)

VERDICT:
It has been a great journey for Stewart, but perhaps Jason Hall is a bridge too far. He's been awesome this week, and survived the Radek Špidlá onslaught to qualify for his second Grand Slam final of the year. But don't discount Stewart; his past results against Hall and on hard courts suggest he shouldn't even still be in Nixonstown in the second week. Despite that, his form this fortnight has been awesome; he's taken out three genuine contenders leading up to this final and his athletic game could see him stun the world No. 1.

Atleast the doubles are looking up for Singh. Singles progress seems to have stalled a tad, but any progress is good progress. Here's for singh and rao's maiden doubles title.

SBI do you think we could create images of say the top 50 plus all of CW?? Kind of time consuming, but I reckon it would look great if possible.

  • Spain's Javier Villaneuva has claimed his third Challenger title of the season after beating 19-year old Belgian Yves Parmentier in straight sets. In his fourth Challenger final of the season, Villaneuva looked the more polished competitor as he played more rounded tennis to take a 6-3, 6-4 win. Villaneuva's victory will see him move to No. 55 in the world when the new rankings are released tomorrow; this despite an ATP record of 2-5.
  • In the doubles draw, Suryakant Singh & Gurpreet Rao have completed a successful week in Poland by claimed a straight sets victory over local pair Dariusz & Radaslaw Marzec to claim the title. The CWLand-Indian team struggled to break serve in the first set, but edged clear in the tiebreaker to take a one-set to love lead. From there, the pressure of the Marzecs fell and their serve was easy pickings for Rao/Singh who ended the Poles' great run 7-6(5), 6-2.

  • Men's singles:
    Yves Parmentier.
  • Men's doubles: None.
PEOPLenet Cup
Final - Dnepropetrovsk (Ukraine)

Men's Singles (Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's Doubles (Draw)

  • Ukraine's Viktor Vuriak has claimed a title in his home country after easing past fifth seeded Fin Lari Färkkilä in Dnepropetrovsk. Vuriak rarely looked troubles as he slaughtered Färkkilä in just over an hour 6-1, 6-3. Vuriak's win will see him move up to No. 51 in tomorrow's rankings, whilst Färkkilä's first final of the season sees him move inside the top eighty to No. 77.
  • In the doubles, second seeds Ritwik Bhutia & Harpreet Gupte have claimed their second title of the season as they came from a set down to edge a tight match against top seeds Gai Kai & Lu Xun. Saving one match point in the deciding tiebreaker, the Indian team secured a 4-6, 6-4, 11-9 win.

  • Men's singles:
    Lari Färkkilä.
  • Men's doubles:
    Gai Kai &
    Lu Xun.

On Bowenburg's days off (so basically tournament Quarter Finals day) he enjoys doing caricatures, here is three of his drawings of fellow Tour players.

C.W. Open - Men's Doubles Final
Heath Davis CWL / Jojo Mustard CWL (6) vs. Hugh James USA / Ralph Robinson USA (2)

Heath Davis & Jojo Mustard have handed CWLand their first bit of Grand Slam silverware after winning the CW Open doubles final against second seeds Hugh James & Ralph Robinson. The sixth seeds were clearly up for the match, and set the scene for how they would play in their first service game; Davis holding to love with four searing first serves in to level the score at 1-1. They would then strike first blood; some smart work from Mustard at the baseline setting up Davis for the easy overhead smash to give the underdogs the first break of service. Serving to stay in the set in the ninth game, the powerful Ralph Robinson struggled to get a first serve in and allowed the CWLanders to take the first with their maiden set point.

The second set, however, started poorly for the locals as they were broken in game three to allow the visitors to edge ahead 3-1. But the lead was quickly cut down after three deuces in the second seeds' third service game; the sixth seeds levelling the set at 3-3. However they were unable to press the advantage, and Davis was broken to give the second seeds a chance at taking the second set on service. However Mustard began to shine, and the solid service of Hugh James was broken thanks to a glorious passing shot from outside the doubles court to see the scores back to 5-5. The world No. 31 in singles then held service to put the pressure back on the second seeds. The French Open champs could not send the set to a tiebreaker, and Davis and Mustard celebrated a 6-3, 7-5 win as Robinson put a forehand long.
