Zimbabwe (ICC 2005)

Seeing as we are witnessing a bit of a revival of the good ol' ICC story at the moment I thought I'd start one up with the currently directionally ******** Zimbabwe team. I'm going to write this as a first person diary from the eyes of the new Zimbabwe coach Sumjerk Ramedmakar; a former Pakistan international who emigrated to Zimbabwe in the late 90's before being offered a job interview with the ZCU........

(It is translated from Urdu)

April 1st 2005

I wandered into the heavily guarded Zimbabwe cricket headquarters in Harare today for a meeting with the big boy Peter whatshisname, thinking I was going to be asked to do a Bob Simpson and play for the national side that is in desperate need of astute coaching, leadership and most of all a gram of talent. So I was thouroughly shocked when he offered me the job of coaching the Zimbabwe mens team. (Hopefully this will one day lead to coaching their fearsome womens side). So it is my job to help rebuild Zimbabwe cricket. I pray this leads to a better quality of life through racial harmony on pianos.

oh btw, I've forgotten how to take a screenshot while playing the game, I know it was covered in one of the topics in the ICC section but I can't find it. Help would be much appreciated.

Hit Print Screen, then alt tab our of the game (I have the game windowed when I paly it..)

Open paint (though I use www.irfanview.com as it's a much quicker and simpler program)

Hit paste (ctrl+v) then go and "save as" a .jpg file! :)

Thanks for that, good program. Back to the writing.

September 28

I met with the selectors today to select the side for the first test against New Zealand. I had hoped to get off to the tour match between the Black Caps and Mashonaland but the meeting went on for quite a while because even with a pool of comparatively poor players it is still a struggle to find the best of them. We ended up deciding on a mix of experience, with a couple of old hands but only two of the squad are over 30 and they are the opening batsmen Carlisle and Wishart, one will most likely drop down the order so we can blood the young Vermeulen while gving him an experienced partner. The squad includes the promising young batsmen Strydom and Ebrahim as well as the young pace bowlers Hondo and Rainsford who will have to open due to the first choice captain Streak having picked up a stomach bug but he should be back for the second test. We have two allrounders, one a spinner and one a seamer. One of these two will miss out, we will decide who on the mornnig of the match when we take a look at the match conditions.

September 30

The squad gathered at one of the local club ovals to train except for Hondo and Carlisle who are playing in the tour match which is keeping us from using the Harare sports club facilities. We had a good net session where Ferreria and Ebrahim impressed with the bat and Eddie Rainsford with the ball. I then ran the lads through some fielding drills before I took them inside for a team talk and lunch. During the meeting Dion Ebrahim let out a series of loud farts before falling asleep while we talked about combating the need to go to the toilet while batting. We got some good things out of the meeting and will hit the nets again tomorrow to brush up on a few things I noticed going wrong today.

I couldn't get the thing the attach so here's a link to the squad for the first test.

October 2 First test against New Zealand

Got to the groud this morning and found that the pitch had a bit of wear which would help the spinners but there was a bit of cloud cover and more predicted by the weather beurau so I decided to leave Ewing out as I was also a bit aprehensive to play two spinners so it was either drop Ewing or play with one lest specialist batsman which I wanted to do even less as we need the longest batting line-up possible. So the team for my first test in charge is a follows.

1. M Vermeulen
2. C Wishart
3. D Marillier
4. G Strydom
5. D Ebrahim
6. S Carlisle
7. N Ferreira
8. G Brent
9. R Price
10. D Hondo
11. E Rainsford

Carlisle has been named stand-in captain for this test so I placed him down the order to lower the stress on him and as a back-up in case of a collapse, Ferreira is behind the sticks on debut. The other players earning their caps are Strydom and Rainsford.

Lost the toss and NZ chose first use of what looked like it would be a good batting wicket for the first few days. Rainsford got off to a good start, picking up his first wicket in his fifth over, Fleming edged a good ball just short of a length to Strydom and second slip. He then picked up McMillian next over with a good inswinger that rapped him on the pads and was given by the umpire. His opening seven over spell cost 13 runs while Hondo Conceeded 22. Price picked up his first wicket with the last ball of his opening over, Oram edging a good turning ball to slip. NZ 42-3. He then proceded to beat Sinclair past the outside edge several times and had me wishing I had played the two spinners, especially since Brent was getting hit all over the park. I brought Rainsford back to bowl a couple of overs before Lunch with no Success. NZ 98-3 at lunch, we had let them off the hook a bit and though a quick wicket after lunch would change that.
Sadly we didn't get it, and Rainsford was delt to by Papps in particular. Just before Tea I tried the old deep square leg trick on Papps and it failed. The only good thing I could take out of that session was that we held them to less than 100 runs. NZ 195-3 at Tea.
It took half an hour but Rainsford finaly got the break we wanted, it wasn't the dangerous looking Papps who had brought up his hundred but Sinclair didn't quite get behind a ball moving into him and edged to slip where Vermeulen snapped up and easy catch. Carlisle did not take the new ball right away so as to give Rainsford some time to recover from his spell and it may have been a good decision as Papps swung at a wide ball from Brent and missed. Brent finally did sort of come good, Astle tried to block a full toss and edged to slip for Vermeulens third catch of the day. We took the new ball with half an hour left as the skipper and I had decided earlier and told Hondo and Rainsford to bowl their hearts out. Sadly the closest we got to a wicket was and LBW appeal against Papps. NZ 330-5 at the end of day one.

October 3 First test against New Zealand

Hondo and Rainsford opened the bowling to Papps (142) and McCullum (44) and got delt to, particularly by the former and it wasn't long before I replaced Hondo with the spinner Price and in his first over McCullum glaced a ball to square leg and called for a run, the fielder exectued a quick return and Papps was on his way for 163. Price then had McCullum LBW for 86 off only 102 balls to bring us well into the tail. I brought Brent back and he bowled a surprisingly tidy spell and NZ were 442-7 at lunch.
Price got a wicket straight away, luring Gillespie down the pitch with the first ball after lunch and he was stumped for 15, bringing Tuffey to the crease. He then bowled Franklin with a good arm ball with the final ball of the same over for 22. He then bowled O'Brien in his next over to end the innings and NZ finnished on 447 all out, an addition of 5 for the last three wickets in the 11 minutes since lunch.
We had a mountain to climb and we started slowly with the openers obviously not wanting to give their wicket away cheaply and we had 20 runs after the first 10 overs. Wishart was soon run out for 11 and we were 31-1. Vermeulen then went for 21 with only 1 run added to the score. Marillier went for one and at 42-3 we were in exactly the same position as the kiwis just a day earlier. Strydom and Ebrahim both hit a few boundaries before tea and we ended the session 66-3.
Ebrahim tried to take charge after tea, hitting a couple of good boundaries before the was bowled by Tuffey and we were 82-4, still 165 runs short of the follow-on target. Strydom was then bowled for 30 and we looked dead at 90-5. We lost Carlisle for 15 an hour before the close but Ferreria and Brent showed great composure along with a great attacking streak and we finnished the day on 166-6, 81 runs short of the follow on.

October 4 First test against New Zealand

We lost Brent half an hour into the session for 30 and Price was caught next ball, Hondo survived the hat-tick ball and supported Ferreria to his 50 on debut off 110 deliveries.Hondo exited for 3 though and at 190-9 I took the top order batsmen aside and talked to them about how we were going to try and make sure we made NZ bat again at least but after a while I noticed that the crowd were cheering and the batsmen were still out in the middle, Ferreria and Rainsford had taken us to 226 and it looked as though we could get past the follow on target. The teams came in at lunch, the visitors looking dejected as Ferreria was cheered off the ground 89 not out after a great session where he battled against fearsome swing and won. 246-9.
Third ball after lunch Ferreria hit a four to pass the follow on target and raise our 250, a big cheer went up around the ground and the batsmen met in the middle to congrtulate each other. The ground exploded again as Ferreria brought up his ton on debut off 173 balls, his second 50 had come in only 63. Things just kept going our way as Rainsford attacked the bowlers and when the centurion was finaly dismissed for 106, the score was 281, 166 runs behind. The last two had put on 91, the highest partnership in the innings.

Papps edged Hondo to second slip early on and it was a releif to get him early, we couldn't afford anyone to make a score. But that was exactly what Fleming and McMillian proceeded to do and by the time Fleming was dropped off Brent the score was 65-1. By tea they had added 8 more and things weren't looking good.
Brent managed to bowl McMillian for 48 to make the score 101-2 almost half an hour into the final session and I wondered wether I should indicate to Carlisle to bring the opening bowlers back on but I persisted as the wind seemed to be taken out of the batsmens sails and eventually Brent was replaced so he could rest. Rainsford bowled the last half hour around the wicket to try and make one final breakthrough while Price tied up the other end and Fleming tried to break the shakles again by advancing down the wicket but all he succeded in doing was flat batting it right back at Price to be out for 80. A few overs later Oram also tried to get the scoring going but he hit it straight down the throat of long on for 26. The day ended with NZ 182-4 thanks to the tight bowling of Rainsford and Price but with a lead of 348 and two days to go, it looks like we may go down, but go down fighting.

October 5 First test against New Zealand.

Price and Rainsford continued on but after the seamer conceded a few runs in his opening overs I replaced him with Brent's medium pace and he got the breakthrough in his first over, Sinclair skying his fourth ball to mid off. It was a little while before anything else of concequence happened but when it did it was a good ball from Price deceiving McCullum who played all around it to leave NZ 257-6. Astle was then stumped off the same bowler for 65 and it looked like the tail would once again crumble. We took the new ball and at lunch they were 295-7.

Unfortunately they wagged and edges fell short, LBW appeals were turned down and balls flew past the bat and all the while they continued to score runs at an alarming pace. I was forced to bring Price back into the attack and he picked up Franklin LBW second ball but the real danger continued to be Gillespie who was charging towards his 50. Thankfully he threw everything at a beautiful inswinger from Brent which took out his off stump and he was on his way for 49. The Kiwis then declared on 357-9 and we were left with the impossible task of scoring 524 to win.

I told the lads to just go out and enjoy batting and we lost Wishart and Marillier before we got past 10. Vermeulen hit a good for before going for 10 and at tea we were 33-3.
We got to 75 only losing Ebrahim but with the score at that number we lost Carlisle after a good little captains cameo of 25 from 36. What was good to see was that Strydom was still there on 28, playing a good innings and he was now joined by his fellow debutant Neil Ferreira who opened his account with a huge six off Gillespie over long off. The two battled past the 100 mark and looked set to make to the end of the day until Strydom was bowled by Oram for 38. Brent came to the wicket and scored some quick runs before being bowled in the last over and the day ended with Zimbabwe 156-7.

October 6 First test against New Zealand

Price left early but Ferriera got to his 50 off 66 balls and has cemented his place for the next series at least. Hondo played the typical tailenders innings and swung at everything while Ferreria the strokemaker blazed away at the other end and with the pressure off seemed to be enjoying himself in the sunshine. When Hondo was out for 19 it looked as if Ferrira would be left stranded but Rainsford stuck around and the went in for lunch 252-9, with the man in question 8 runs short of two hundreds on debut.
Sadly in his quest for the runs he swung at a good ball from Tuffey and edged to the man at silly mid on, four runs short of the milestone.

I think the positives to take out of this game are the batting from Strydom and most certainly Ferreira, they both batted well on a difficult pitch against difficult bowling on debut and in both innings they both steadied the ship when it was well needed. The bowling of Rainsford on day one and Price right thorughout was fantastic. The negatives, we need to watch our RPO's when bowling, we conceded runs at quite a pace. Both the bowling and Batting of Brent needs to mature, he lost it at times with the ball and he was too aggressive with the bat, getting out to stupid shots after making some quick runs. Also the batting of our top order, sure they're not test class batsmen most of them but they should do better, especially against that bowling attack.

The selection meeting takes all of 10 minutes as we decide to simply replace Brent with Heath Streak who will take the reigns as skipper. We looked at the scores and reviewed the notes from the first test and decided that if the conditions warrant it we will play both spinners in this game, meaning Wishart will get dropped and Carlisle will move to open. After Price's ten wickets he is being hailed in the press as Zimbabwe's great bowling hope as we try to climb back up the ladder. This may be a bit premature I feel, New Zealand are very suspect against spin bowling.

October 9

There was cloud cover predicted all day and the pitch looked to suit the seamers so we kept with the 3 seamers, 1 spinner formula and hope we won the toss so we could bowl.
The team is:
1. M Vermeulen
2. C Wishart
3. S Carlisle
4. G Strydom
5. D Ebrahim
6. N Ferreira
7. D Marillier
8. H Streak
9. R Price
10. D Hondo
11. E Rainsford

We lost the toss but for some reason Fleming decided to bat under cloudy skies with a green pitch. We hoped we could make some early breakthroughs and we got one early, Fleming playing all around a Streak delivery with the score on 10, He then had Papps LBW for 18 with the score on 30. When Streak was replaced by Hondo his figures were 6-1-10-2. He will be a big factor in this test, that is my prophecy. McMillian and Oram managed to recover from the early hiccups however and at lunch NZ were 110-2.
Soon after the break Macca was caught at slip off who else but Streak for 50 from a good outswinger. Sadly at tea we were only a missed slash from Oram (94 runs) and an LBW appeal against Sinclair (44) closer to a wicket and they had raised the total to 214-3.
Sinclair was finaly bowled by our spin supremeo for 60; but the game was getting further and further away from us and my general feeling was that if we didn't get Oram soon, the game would already be lost. Heath took the new ball and brought himself back into the attack with an hour to go and Hondo had Oram caught behind off a ball moving back into him for 132 and NZ were now 279-5 and looking much less dangerous. Streak then had Astle caught at second slip soon after and it looked as if we could get to the verge of knocking them over before the end of the day. We didn't. The day ended NZ 323-6.

October 10 Second test agianst New Zealand

Rainsford had a couple of LBW appeals turned down early on but McCullum was soon run out for 44 and the tail was exposed but the 400 was soon brought up and I was left scratching my head as to how we could make our bowlers more potent but just as I thought this, Gillespie was had his stumps rearranged as much as a spinner can rearrange them and NZ were 403-8. At lunch they were 428 and the skipper came up the steps a bit fustrated that despite bringing himself on to bring home the bacon the edges he extracted fell short of the feilders all session long.
It was 35 minutes into the session before Price bowled Franklin, and his score 74 shows how impotent my bowlers had been. The fielding seemed poor too, as an easy chance was dropped at mid-off after Tuffey skied a Hondo delivery. Hondo got his revenge though, bowling the same batsman to round off the kiwi innings with them 470 All out. Which looking at our batting line-up is a hug score but if we fire we should get somewhere near it ourselves.

Wishart left for two with the score on nine and in my mine signed his death warrant, see him in a logan cup game near you soon. Carlisle was caught in the last over before tea to have us reeling at 28-2. Vermeulen and Strydom tried to take charge but the latter offered and edge to an O'Brien ball that flew tamely to the keeper. 59-3. Vermuelen brought up his 50 in 117 balls and with the same single brought up the 50 partnership with Ebrahim. At the end of the day we were 119-3.

October 11 Second test against New Zealand

We started the day 351 behind and by the time Vermeulen had brought up his second test century (off 214 balls) the lead had been cut to 279. Ebrahim completed his supporting 50 with a great cut behind square off the 131st ball he faced. By lunch we were 216-3 and the partnership was worth 157. The new ball was taken half an hour into the afternoon session and Ebrahim was soon bowled by Tuffey for 73 and the partnership was broken for 186. Zimbabwe 243-4. Vermeulen was bowled by Gillespie for 129 and was cheered off the ground with a standing ovation from every soul in the ground capable of it (Carlisle was coma'd out on a chair).Ferriera was bowled by Frankln for twenty and the score was 294-6, well past the follow on target. At tea we were 322-6.
Marillier was gone soon after the resumption for an attacking 41, caught deep on the square leg boundary. Hondo, Price and Rainsford all capitulated quickly and we were all out for 352, 118 runs behind, and a lot was owed to Vermeulen and Ebrahim.

Flemming and Papps batted out the session and were 33-0 at close of play.

October 12 Second test against New Zealand

It took a while for the breakthrough to come but Fleming offered an edge that was snapped up at slip for 30. NZ 46-1. Rainsfords tight spell ended with his ten overs going for 19 and his replacement Price had McMillian LBW for 11 in his second over. Just before lunch Streak struck again, Papps caught behind for 54, his good series coming to an end with 163 runs to his name. NZ 118-3 at lunch.
Hondo and Price both had the batsmen in trouble soon after lunch and their luck just kept getting worse as, Verleulen who usualy has very safe hands, dropped a Sinclair edge of the fast bowler. Edges continued to be missed and appeals turned down until both were replaced just before tea. Oram was run out for 60 though and at tea the score was 220-4, 338 ahead. Rainsford caught the edge of Astles bat and NZ were 247-5. The new ball was taken and the batsmen were in trouble once again but it wasn't until Price came on that McCullum edged to silly mid on for 17. Price then Bowled Franklin and NZ declared soon after on 286-7, leaving us an impossible 404 to win in just over a day. I thought we should play for a draw but Vermeulen was bowled, and Wishart caught, both for two and at the end of the day we were on the brink of a heavy loss at 13-2.

October 13 Second test against New Zealand

The expectations were for us to be six down at lunch but after a spirited partnership between Strydom (47) and Carlisle (32) we were 99-4, 306 to win, I just told them to bat out the day.
Which is a lot harder than it sounds but at Tea, after an Ebrahim 40 and supporting innings from Ferreira, Marillier, Streak and Price we were 223-7 but the 182 to win seemed a bit out of reach and so it proved Price the last out for a fantastic 57 from 73 balls and the test was lost by 125 runs.
