no, the only time gough was ever consistent was between the WI series in 00 and pak in 01......

Agarkar was never inconsistent- just average at best and terrible otherwise.

Afridi was only at his best in those exhibition tournaments, but did little elsewhere.

Well he's had an occasional good spell (the only one in Tests was the 6-for at Adelaide Oval), but he definately is one of those who either takes wickets or gets hammered, not often both at the same time.
At least, he was until about 2 years ago. From then he's just been pretty poor full-stop.

Sorry, thought you were talking England(h) to England(a).
Still, he'd done poorly against Zimbabwe in the interim (Murali kinda stole the show that series).
And it still stands that the conditions in England weren't seam-friendly as sterotype would have it. They were much more Sri Lankan in nature.
