Last Over - Incorrect Scoring Error Issue Feedback

Hi there,

We had an incident occur yesterday in a local game and would like to know what people's thoughts are on how the outcome should be resolved.

Our team batted first and set a total 140 for the other side to chase down.

We were down to the last over and the scorer's for the batting team yelled out that they needed 7 to win the game off the last over (6 to draw). We got down to the last ball and the scorer's yelled out that the batting side needed 3 to win (2 to draw) off the last ball.
Ball was bowled, play and miss, batsmen run 1 bye. Game over, fielding side win by 1 run.

After the sides had shaken hands and left the ground the scorer's realise they have missed a bye in the score and 10 minutes after the game has ended they realise in the scorebook its actually a draw..

Does the draw now become the official score or does it stay with the way the game was played out?

Would love feedback so we can implement a rule for this in our local league.

If you have official umpires they would be keeping a note of the score through the game and confirming correctness at each break, or if they think there is an error.

If the umpires discover an error after the teams have left the field in the belief that they game has concluded (they should confirm, with the scorers, on leaving the field, that all is correct) they should, in this situation, inform both captains of the correct result.

Once the umpires have confirmed the result it cannot be changed - Law 21. 9 & 10 cover this.

The problem would occur if there were no official umpires and at least one scorebook was not managed throughout by at least one competent scorer throughout he game.

I would suggest in this situation that, as long as both books have the bye recorded the result should be a draw as that would be comparable to the umpires checking after the game.

Suspecting no official umpires and no designated scorers (the book being done by players of the batting side) your League might choose to insert a rule along the lines of the following:

"If, at the conclusion of the game, it is found that an incorrect result may have been assumed the scorebooks should be compared. If the point in doubt is recorded in both books the result may be changed."

This is always a grey area when there aren't official umpires or competent scorers.

No easy answer either, because it's open to cheating by the scoring (batting) team.

when you have player umpires they are considered to have the same powers and be treated as if they were official umpires. if they make a decision it is to stand.

scores are often wrong in the book though, if they were calling out the runs required during the last over and hands were shaken, that should be the result.

The amateur league I played at had the umpires word as final. So if there was a discrepancy between two books, the umpire (who should be tracking the score) will clarify which is correct.

However, in a situation like this, I believe the result of the game cannot be altered once the match is over.

Yeah a similar thing cost us a slice of 10k not long ago. If the players all complete the game under the understanding of the score to be correct, it should stand.

i think its a bit different with television and proper scorers. for park cricket the books are often wrong and can't really be trusted. so to go back and change a result based on a dodgy book is wrong imo.

if you can go back and prove conclusively that an error was made that cost a team, thats the right thing to do
