South African Domestic Season 2012/13

Picked up 5 wickets in the amateur win over Easterns for Northerns where seamers seemed to be favoured. Also took them over the line with the bat with a 20*. Hopefully we see him in the Titans line-up to be given an opportunity sooner rather then later.

He'll probably be there soon based on what's happening against the Warriors. TBF, Harmer and Gqamane look decent talents.

Lets hope so but they seem to back Shaun Von Berg and he was 12th man here. So you leave out Harris or Vd Merwe and they bring him in. I think Harris is past it and Von Berg is ok but I reckon Kaber has far more potential. I'm hoping he dominates amateur cricket and he gets a contract for next season at the Titans. Thats the message I seemed to pick up from Maynard saying its a big season for him.

5ft2 Gqamane showing off his batting skills for the first time at franchise level. Certainly looks a talent and Harmer will come into the season more as the pitches get lower and slower and turn more. Batted well today as well Harmer. Both certainly have ability but the Warriors could do with some young gun batsmen to come through but don't see it.

Savage impressing for the Dolphins as well. Along with Morris and Gqamane some decent all-rounders new on to the scene. Pretty excited about the future of South African cricket. Some really good talent domestically and currently at the Cubs Week as well.

Calvin Savage has been doing really well for the Dolphins. Developing with bat and ball. But it seems the batting allrounders like Kallis, Hall, McMillan are no longer being produced. These type of players were a staple of our teams and they give good balance to teams. the only one i see is David wiese. but i think we need alot more of these type of players.

Exactly. They have decent One-day batsmen in Davy Jacobs and Colin Ingram but they do seem to lack quality longer version batsman and for some time now.

But think about the number of players they lost to other provinces/international teams before that like Tony Greig, Graeme Pollock, Ken McEwan, Daryll Cullinan etc

Agree with this. You can think far back to now and we've had the likes of Goddard, Barlow, Rice, McMillan, Kallis and all batted in the top 6.

Besides Wiese that you mention, there is Brett Pelser who is new to the Lions team who seems to be a batting all-rounder. Dominated amateur cricket so interesting to see how he goes. Otherwise the other batsmen who bowl seamers seem more part-timers.

At the Cubs week there is Shaylen Pillay and Dayyaan Galiem who seem talented batting all-rounders.

Agree, he has made his breakthrough at franchise level in the longer version over the lst couple of seasons. The Warriors do need him to score more runs for them.

Of course I forgot to mention their best longer version player in recent times has been Ashwell Prince.

Sure but other than the mentioned Prince (who I think came through WP), there's been very little batting talent pushing the envelope but as long as I can remember. Ingram is decent but he's in the minority. E.g. Ntini, Tsotsobe, Kemp, Zondeki, Ngam, Parnell, Peterson, Botha have all come through in the past decade.

Prince couldn't get into the EP team due to Kepler, Rushmere, Callaghan etc so made the move to WP. So its a tough one to choose where he came through I suppose.

They were before my time . I remember the days of Mark Benfield, Carl Bradfield and James Bryant.

Yeah I agree with his overall point; I was just challenging the idea of Ingram being a LO specialist. He's developing into a good First Class cricketer too even if he's too technically limited to ever make a real push for Test honours.

Yeah, there was a period when he was in scintilating form for the Lions where he could have got a few Proteas caps. Pace, bounce but probably just lacked a repetitive action.

Alviro is obviously also from those parts but moved while a teenager. The road he travelled and adversity he faced to get where he is now is remarkable. That is why his story is often given to the kids at the end of the Cubs Week for who don't make the SA u19 side.

Gqamane with a 6-for again to go with his 86. If the 'A' tour to Sri Lanka is still on we should see him there.

Warriors win by 10 wickets and the Titans are left licking their wounds again. Haven't recieved this sort of treatment for a while. They are missing Rudolph, AB, Faf, Morne, Albie & De Lange but need more players to step up.

Also quite difficult for a young player to get into their Northerns amateur team even though none of the players are standing out there really. Players like Kaber and Theunis De Bruyn (who played in u19 CWC) should have been involved with amateur side from the beginning of the season but only Kaber has just joined it and De Bruyn yet to get a go.

Was just thinking back to the 2008 U19 CWC batting line-up and how Jonathan Vandiar hasn't kicked on as much as first hoped.

Line-up was Pieter Malan, Jon-Jon Smuts, Rilee Rossouw, Reeza Hendricks, Jono Vandiar, Yaseen Vallie, Obus Pienaar & Wayne Parnell. Quite an effort for all 8 to have got to franchise cricket. Rossouw and Hendricks have kicked on the most, particularly for a test spot into the future ito batting.

But so much was thought of Vandiar. The one-day game seems to suit him more where his aggreessive play seems to be better used. But I remember him scoring a good 60 odd against Steve Harmison and Garnett Kruger in the 4-day stuff as a 16/17 year-old but still only has 2 FC centuries which is a poor return. Seeing a bit of One-day stuff this season and some footage of the 4-day stuff where he sits at first-slip, he really has got over weight...Ray Jennings did say if he got lazy he wouldn't achieve his true potential and it looks like he was right.

Technically Vandiar isn't the greatest as he doesn't use his feet a lot but that doesn't seem a necessity in todays game anymore seeing some players playing test cricket. He certainly relies on natural talent ,good eye and quick hands. He is still young mind you and will definitely be in the mix for T20 and ODI cricket going forward but needs to find more consistency in all forms.

The 2010 side we sent was a really average one. Still don't know how we beat Aus and got to QF. I've also found it strange how Hendricks and Hume did so well in that tournament but aren't cricketers that were talked up with any pedigree and seeing them aren't really franchise players. Hendricks did get a few opportunities for the Lions but didn't take them and hasn't really done much for Gauteng either recently. The one player from this group who has come on leaps and bounds though is Cody Chetty at the Dolphins. Really nice player.

I follow Coke Week and SA u19 and you often know if there is a buzz around a group of players. These players put in performances at both Coke Week (Make SA Schools & Colts side) and Cubs Week. This was the case for the 2008 bunch (Not forgetting Dave Miller just missed out on selection here). This 2012 bunch (ie De Kock, Bowes, Subrayen, Savage, Dry, Nqweni, Williams etc This 2013 bunch who fall in between a WC have it as well and one or two will be eligible for 2014 u19 CWC
