When and Who will break the world record????

Never, literally if any batsman even gets to 400, then they want shooting for not playing for their team because in all likelihood they won't be scoring fast enough to define the match or will take too much time out of the game doing so.

Ponting was quite right when he referred to Lara's 400 as selfish.
I disagree. 90 overs in a day of test cricket. If the team batting first bats really well, and through the first two days, that gives them roughly 180 overs of batting.

That's approx 1080 balls. A player going in early on the first day and batting through the two days could reasonably expect to face 540 balls.

If my maths is correct, to score 400 in that time, you'd need a strike rate of about 75. Very do-able.

No reason why anyone like Gayle, Warner, Sehwag (or anyone really) couldn't do that, and still leave their team three days to bowl out the opposition twice.

Being fit enough, having the concentration, and the luck, are other things altogether.

My money would be on Warner to put together a massive score at some point. Young, fit, and once he gets going could do it very very quickly .

....when Hayden made his 380, his SR was 87. Australia declared before the end of day 2 (when Hayden went out).

Australia won that test by an innings and a fair bit.

Imagine the pressure on a captain, the whole country would want to see someone get a 400 (especially if the player is well liked), but you'd have declaration on your mind round the end of day 2 wanting to get a crack at them at the end of the day.

When Clarke made his 329*, Australia won by an innings with a day to spare....

Shane Watson. Reckon once he finally converts he literally just won't get out ever again.

Norwood's on Fire
Alastair Cook. Next year's Ashes, OLd Trafford. Aussies win toss, bat, all out for 63. England declare 812 ahead with 12 overs left of day three, Cook unbeaten on 407.

FTR England win the game by an innings by tea on day four.

Coincidentally it's also around that time people decide not to watch test cricket anymore

Except that Siddle and Pattinson's frustrations boil over and they start test cricket's first all in brawl, immediately after Cook scores his 400. Cook is hospitalised, and Warne rushes from the commentary box to finally have the crack at Bell he's always wanted. Australia win the fight easily (obviously).

Administrators decide it's good for the game and encourage captains to consider it as a tactic more. "Selectors will look favourably upon...."

International Debutant
Sehwag looks most likely to do that, although he is probably past his peak now. The 319 vs SA at Chennai came of just 304 balls! A batting pitch and there is good possibility of him breaking the record by lunchtime on second day.
