Ram's choice of Rest of India team for tests

Frankly, the Rest Of India side for the Irani Trophy will effectively be an Indian side, since no players from Railways, except probably Murali Karthik, will make the Indian side. I don't know if the frontliners are available for this match. This is also a good lineup-
  • Sehwag/Jadhav
  • Gambhir
  • Laxman
  • Tendulkar
  • Dravid (c)
  • Dharmani (wk)
  • Irfan Pathan
  • Harbhajan/Powar
  • Kumble
  • Zaheer
  • VR Singh/Gagandeep
Railways may just field their best lineup, though they can try this one-
  • Shankara Rao/Khanolkar
  • Pagnis
  • TP Singh
  • Yere Goud
  • JP Yadav
  • Raja Ali
  • Bangar (c)
  • Siddharth Joshi (wk)
  • Murali Karthik
  • Parida
  • Harvinder/Saxena

Cricket, Lovely Cricket
For the sake of the players I hope there is no cricket any time soon in India specially considering about two days ago temperature in Orissa went to *** high as 46 degrees. Damn hot in UP where I was for 3 weeks and its boiling in Calcutta too.

Thank god for the AC!

Dharmani is a surprise inclusion, May be he is the second best option after Kaarthick.
Instead of 3 fast bowlers, i would go for 2 fast bowlers and include an extra batsman say Venugopala.

Dharmani has been around for more than ten years, though he's only been wicketkeeping in half the matches he has played. However, he is a steady hand behind the stumps and won't let the team down. His batting is good enough for an Indian top-6, which makes him a genuine contender for thse spot, but didn't help himself much by fielding elsewhere. As a batsman, he can play the waiting game and steady the innings, to build a partnership. He can attack when needed and is capable of letting loose a few strokes. He was once considered as a contender for the wicketkeeper position, but they stuck to Mongia and played Dharmani as a batsman instead. Better choice than Bisla, who was with Haryana as an opener and medium-pacer- better to avoid such selections.

Why go in for an extra batsman? Dharmani is as good a batsman as anyone on the bench and can replace the out-of-form top-six regulars, without doing much wrong. Sure, Venugopal may deserve a place in the side, but there are four heavyweights ahead of him, as well as a fringe batsman wo can keep. This is also a good chance for Pathan to put his six-hitting to good use at seven, from which both he, and more imporantly, his team, will benefit.

If you dont consider the age factor, Dharmani could be a good bet. are you sure he keeps well as any keeper. If India is winning more test matches, there could be no debate over the middle order positions, as it happens for australia. Here, Venugopala is not being included due to the awesome record of the top 6 regardless of their inability to win matches.

We have seen the likes of MSK Prasad, Parthiv Patel and Deep Dasgupta keep for India. Everyone knows how good they were. Rahul Dravid's attempts at wicketkeeping had put extra strain on the bowlers for a very long time. In comparison, Dharmani has been wicketkeeping for several years, and hasn't done much wrong. I have not seen much of him on television, save the Challenger Trophy three years ago, but fans who have seen him in action live say he's a steady keeper. He's a much better batsman than those three other contenders, and has kept a lot more than Dravid. Maybe Venugopal can be included ahead of Laxman, but that's a tough decision to make.

i agree he cannot be any worse than parthiv and das gupta. it would make an interesting selection. And including Venugopala ahead of Laxman would be a drastic decision to make.May be we can include Venugopala ahead of VRV/Gagandeep and play with four bowlers and Venugopala himself may don the role of the fifth bowler.

Five bowlers should be tried out, given how strong the middle-order is. Besides, Venugopal is an occasional two-over bowler and cannot be relied on to bowl 20 overs every innings. Irfan Pathan's big-hitting ability should be used to good effect at number seven- that can open up a new option for the Indian side. Anyway, given Sachin's injuries, he can take a break from this match, so Venugopal still has a chance. It depends on when this match is played. Vikram Singh is a lot faster than the average Indian medium-pacer, so he too should be tried out.

as for your railways team, Kanolkar apart from the surprising century against australia, he never scored any runs. Why do you need him as an opener
