Hope the question makes sense. For instance, is the record something like 'making the highest team score in test cricket' or is it 'being at the receiving end of the highest team score in test cricket'

YES. They did. Though its a dubious record in the sense that it is not a great achievement or one to be proud of :p

ANOTHER HINT : Australia and West indies hardly figure (except the very first decade in cricket for both). This is significant !
