What does Bumrah need to achieve to overtake Sachin?

Given where Bumrah is at now, what would he need to achieve from here to be India's greatest cricketer?

It's not going to happen. Longevity plays a huge role here considering the span of Sachin's career and his consistency for large periods of it.

Finishing in all time top 10 bowlers list is a more realistic target for Bumrah than this one. Such an average thread this.

We generally see Tendulkar vs Mcgrath/Marshall threads end here with a slight edge to the bowlers or equal overall... That's pretty much the answer then if you're going solely by tests... Bumrah has to be in the GOAT test bowler conversation

In terms of quality, Bumrah is up there with Sachin.

Sachin is a top 3 candidate for best batsmen in tests and ODIs. He retired with the most tests, most ODIs, most runs, most centuries in both formats.

Just more matches and more wickets. His level of performance is already at one-of-the-greatest-ever level

I don’t think he’s quite at that level although not too far off. I view Bumrah as being at a similar level to Imran/Wasim in terms of quality although that may be an unpopular opinion.

Become a top 5 level fast bowler of all time.

400 test wickets
Average under 21( as he is in relatively bowling friendly era )

Rest, away averages and 5-fers are taken care of already so its the two points highlighted.

POTT in ODI WC (with at least a 3-fer in final), test series wins in SA and ENG. (for me)

For most people, whatever is written in above posts.

Quality wise Bumrah is up there with the best.

Best bowling average by any bowler with 200+ wkts

Avg of 17 in Australia
Avg of 17 in India
Avg of 20 in SouthAfrica
Avg of 26 in England

32 wickets in 5 Tests in Australia @ 13
23 wickets in 5 Tests in England @ 22
12 wickets in 2 Tests in SouthAfrica @ 12
13 wickets in 2 Tests in WestIndies @ 9
19 wickets in 4 Tests in India @ 16

Overall record ✅
Away record ✅
ATG series ✅

With the exception of NewZealand where he has played just 2 Tests, he has been excellent everywhere.

300+ wickets with the current sort of record and I will place him on par with Malcolm Marshall.
Not really. I would still go with Maco because of average boost of era, lack of standout match performances and lack of durability.

Bumrah is like Ambrose level in quality with less imposing physiology but reverse.

Yes I consider him the best pacer both in terms of quality and record but he had great benefits :
1. Playing alongside ATG pacers & in great team
2. Becoming full time in WI team @ right age(25)
3. Retiring before pace & skills dropped(33 years)

Yes those probably contributed to a 1-2 point average boost.

The avg boost of era isn't that high with Marshall tbh (as compared to Mcgrath, Steyn let's say). Bumrah too I think has quite a few standout match and series performances, agree with the durability point though. Will need to make that up by some longevity or having an insane record hereafter as well

Bumrah was full time at 25 too but was always broken. He also played for what was at the time a pretty decent Indian side.

33 is also not that crazy of an age for a pacer to retire.
