Thanks very much for doing this DoG. I was mostly motivated to show that Ames' pretty average wasn't all that it's cut out to be, which is demonstrated nicely here. The Waite glow-up was also expected and other acolytes of him like @Prince EWS will be pleased to see his record stand up to muster. That said, de Kock's margin here is pretty notable and, given that his glovework was always pretty solid to my own eyes, maybe I should be rating him a bit higher. Could he replace Waite in my all-time ZA XI and World third XI? Perhaps, but I'll have to let that crystallize. Pretty average does not equal high quality batsman though, as Ames has shown.

Hutton up to no.3. Richards drops out of the top 10 and Weekes and Brooks are no longer in the top 20. Boycott is now above Sehwag. I don't really mind any of those but seeing Trumper almost 40 places below Hill and Gilchrist barely making it into the top 100 give me pause for thought.

Sehwag’s positioning especially seems much better, and Brook whilst still high does not seem so excessive.

I agree re: Trumper and Hill, I don’t think there’s much of a gap between them, what is the breakdown/cause of this gap?

Gilly is an interesting one. He benefitted from coming into the side late, as pitches were flattening out, and at his peak. Obviously also batting behind the best top 6 in the world. However this made his career quite short, it wouldn’t surprise me if he had been able to crack the side earlier he might’ve had a few years before 99 where he was top quality, after an early settling in period leading to a similar average but with the longer career.

Based on the career he had I don’t think close to the 100 mark is way off base but it definitely feels off to see Pant ahead of him.

I kinda like a sort of symmetry in points here tho. Gap between 100-50 is 61 points. Gap between 50-25 is 63 points. Gap between 25-10 is 67 points. Gap between 10-2 is 62 points. (Dunno if this was similar in the original or less weight list lol)

Sorry to ask another thing of you @Days of Grace , but I’m curious re: how all the other great AR’s came out batting wise. Miller, Imran, Botham, Kapil, Hadlee, Shakib, Jadeja, Stokes, Pollock. A lot of arguments and polls come up regarding their secondary skills, would be very interested to see how they fare compared to each other.

I just love with how less you give weightage to strike rate, auraman Viv goes down the ranking. Guess all that 'swagger' can't get him into the top 10.

Would it be possible at some point to do a table where you list each member of the top 100's ranking by category? I.e. columns for career ranking/overall avg ranking/peak avg ranking/non-home avg ranking/overall ranking - so you can see at a glance where players ranked in each category without having to find their individual entry in the thread? Thank you!

It's not a batsman only phase. It is literally the prime phase. In the initial few years when he was keeping, his batting avg without gloves wasn't much different to with gloves. He was still evolving as a batsman. It all changed around 2004-2005.
