Suggestions for improving Cricket Web

The Player Comparisons forum clearly isn't working as a containment zone. Instead, it has made a terrible style of posting seem acceptable and lowered the overall quality of the forum, as seen in DoG's latest thread. The obvious solution is to make it clear that terrible posting is terrible, instead of creating a direness subbie.

The "ranking" threads in Cricket Chat are essentially comparison threads so all the poster beefs break the containment zone.

The obvious solution is to stick the frequent offenders on ignore.

Oh I have. My ignore list has about a dozen members, all belonging to the PC cesspit. Those ****wits still ruin perfectly good threads as good posters become collateral damage in their ****-flinging contests. Thankfully I haven't read a post from the worst offenders in ages but **** still smells even if you're not watching people defecate.

It's not the comparisons or even the straw man arguments over particular player strengths that particularly bother me, but it's clear that it has got quite personal between a number of posters and they can't reign it in when engaging in threads on other forums. These guys are clearly knowledgeable about the game but the personal attacks on each other combined with essay like contributions repeating the same points across multiple threads is not bringing much to the forum right now.

Yeah I think we're already trying to cut out the more personal attacks and grudge side of things per the recent community statement from James. And we'll try and be stricter with keeping threads on topic (a la PEWS in DoG's thread last night).

Otherwise if some members want to debate cricketers in a way that other members of the forum don't want to debate cricketers that's fine provided topics are kept to relevant threads. This is a cricket forum, if some people want to spend 20 pages in one day arguing over Kallis' strike rate and then 20 pages the next day repeating those exact same arguments I'm fine with that. Provided it's kept to the "Hey, what do you guys think about Kallis' strike rate??" thread and doesn't spill into the latest Bangladesh tour thread.

Any chance of a spring clean on the Cricket Chat Forum? There's so much crap in there which ought to be in Player Comparisons. Or can we create a separate forum for the 'Should you be rated higher if you win the toss with a higher strike rate and a desire to win' shite??

Just my take not an official mod one but I can't see that working. You shouldn't be able to control what someone else can view.
If you have someone on ignore, you can't see their stuff but they can. Moreover they are still able to react to your posts (emojis). At least they shouldn't be able to react or even directly quote your posts.

I'm afraid I don't think your proposed solution would work (e.g. think of the scenario where someone uses such a function to stop another user from seeing their posts and takes the opportunity to criticise that user in posts they now cannot see or respond to.)

If you are concerned about a particular poster who you wish to stop interacting with you let a mod know (either by PM or using the report post function). If we agree then we can directly instruct the other user to avoid interacting with you. Breaking such an instruction would then result in infractions/bans.

Report those threads to the mods if you think it should be moved to another forum/sub-forum.

The forum becomes shitty at this time every year because the IPL window ensures people don't have any real cricket to talk about and they snipe at each other and/or obsess over historical rankings instead out of boredom. Maybe just bookmark the County Championship thread and stick to that until there's a Test series to talk about.

I didn’t think you needed all the qualifiers tbh
