South African Domestic Season 2025/26

howitzer

State Captain
I am not sure what phelukwayo is these days. Doesn't bowl and hardly bats.
Yeah he's not even a no-rounder anymore, just a **** batsman who also occasionally bowls **** too. The days when he was a genuinely decent Limited overs bowler and a sort of vaguely useful bat are long gone.

Dawood such a good t20 specialist. Not sure he even got a game? Barely played the season he was at central gauteng either.

Titans used the bulldog as the specialist spinner with Ferreira and brand as secondary spinners in white ball cricket. Don't think dawood played in either t20 or one day cup.

No idea when we are actually going to have money to compete with Lions, Titans and Dolphins but what we do have is an excellent cricket nursery and I think we need to build and sell that WP brand again ?

Get guys like Jason Smith, Zubayr Hamza, Gavin Kaplan, Matthew De Villiers, Dayyaan Galiem, Meeka-eel Prince, Lehan Botha, Wesley Bedja & Siya Plaatjie back home.

Probably when you guys don't need to rely on CSA for funding.
Lions, Titans and Dolphins only 3 who don't rely on CSA for funding.

Marketing is important. They were the only local provinces along with SA20 sides who send out easter messages. The other provinces and CSA social platforms did nothing. As the saying goes out of sight out of mind.

While some of this is true it's is sort of about money in the region as well. WP should be doing better. But no matter how you slice it the EC are not going to get big local sponsors because it doesn't have the attraction or the monies in the region. And while the cricket isn't been shown on TV consistently enough there isn't a nation wide audience.

Let's not fool ourselves one of the biggest reasons that the domestic franchises that earn the most money are because they are in the regions that have the biggest audience just because of local density with access to more monies.

Dolphins haven't really signed many players in the last couple seasons, they've just had a good pipeline and retention 'til now?

Western Province cricket much like the rugby was run into the ground by idiots. There seems to be an upward trend since Corrie van Zyl joined and sponsorships are flying in. First Sahara and then Six Gun Grill, WP were too reliant on those in the recent past.

Also the funding for that new building at the ground which faced challenges during covid didn't help. But hopefully now they have got through it, the rewards are starting to flow. They have a lovely new bar/restaurant at the ground now too.

100%
You guys had the motor car industry once upon a time but if you are Eastern Cape or even Bloemfontein you will grab the chance with the big 4 whether it is cricket, rugby or football. It's just a food chain thing sadly. Bigger cities and bigger monies.

It has quietened down but they have flexed their muscles in the last decade or so with Morne van Wyk, Ottneil Baartman, JJ Smuts, Ryan McLaren, Jason Smith, Anrich Nortje, Dane Vilas, Vaughn van Jaarsveld etc

Guys like Marques Ackerman, Bryce Parsons & Tristan Luus are smart though. They got in early and recruited them.

Yeah the restaurant is great and open to the general public during the week and weekends. I see the local government gave WP and Boland around 8 bar each for stadium etc, Also heard megapro marketing are in charge of selling the stadium sponsorship rights to name.

They would not be as big as the big 3 but there is no reason they can't turn a profit. Many of these smaller provinces have a control issue and have faced either financial or corruption issues in the recent past.

The Amateur clubs in charge of running a professional union is the big issue , rugby franchises getting it right now.
