There's a certain kind of guy, not uncommon, who still has massive school patriotism in his thirties and forties and invests in school rivalries more than he should.

I'll automatically hope my old school beats the local sport school if I hear the game is coming up, and I'll say boo if the sport school wins, but I also really dgaf about my old school and its attitude so I kinda side eye people who still emotionally invest in its fortunes and bang on about its values. It's a school, they're all ****ing boring. Uni and adult life is so much more interesting.

Tl;Dr Stevenson is a bore if he cares enough about school rivalries to risk his job but then he probably didn't think before speaking.

Ultimately Stevenson fails in his core role which - in the absence of having any international experience - should be to call the play accurately while the former internationals provide the insights & anecdotes.
He cries out “that’s a chance!” when it isn’t and the ball falls in acres of open pasture, he says the ball is racing away for a boundary when it is hauled in metres inside the rope….and on it goes.
His inane rambling and excessive verbosity & general air of smugness are just additional pain points for viewers.

Is there a YouTube compilation of his calls, I really want to see how bad it is.

It's bad. Earlier this test Mackay was banging on about WI needing to bowl a fuller length to hit top of off at bouncy Hagley. Stevenson agreed and right after was a harmless back-of-the-length ball bouncing to waist height and he said "that's the length, right there".

Even as a big proponent of 4 pacers + 1 batting all-rounder who can be the spinner, I'm fine with playing Phillips and Santner for non-Hagley home tests anyway tbh. Santner's made leaps and bounds with his bowling.

Saw the description of Young's dismissal on cricinfo and it read like an unplayable ball. But nah, fine ball but length was well over bail level and Young fended badly. A great chance to get back in form goes begging.

I just can't handle the way he talks. Never could. Slow rambling speech failing to actually describe anything.
