How was Latham’s innings today? Was it a case of cashing in as things eased out, or did he have to negotiate testing conditions/bowling to begin with?

Paced well, Ravindra picking him up a bit. Was also being served some real hot filth to be fair.

I shouldn't snark, Shields has a great natural action, pace and shape, and you feel like if he'd had some top coaching 5+ years ago he could've developed into an excellent bowler. Pretty tough now he's 30 though, just so much improvement in accuracy is needed.

it appears that as bowlers tire and the pitch starts to get a bit baked, a wicket that did a lot early doors can be a bit more tame by day three

anyway time to take a big sip of matcha from my cup that says the perth pitch was not good

Ian Smith also mentioned this today lol. Clearly doesn't like him.
I remember his "shithouse commentary" line when Fox showed the Johnson/Kelly catch.

I've struggled to listen to Smithy since "barest of margins", but him commentating India 2024 helped.

Phillips not in Otago Plunket Shield squad for game starting Fri, perhaps a couple of days off then heading to the Basin for 2nd test?

Jamieson in Canterbury PS squad.

Only one day's gap between the end of the Plunket game and the start of the next test. As many as 9 days of play in 10 is a bit unreasonable. Suggestive that Phillips will be included for test two but Jamieson won't.

The weird one is Mitch Hay playing two days for Canterbury then exiting and being replaced by Frew. Weird and frankly unfair. Canterbury announced this arrangement after their squad announcement, so maybe it was allowed because Hay was already on the plane to Napier and no one else could make it in time? If so, informing Canterbury too late is a bit of a **** up from NZC (the conspiracy theorist in me says it was intentional).
