The ICC really need to do something about the qualifiers for these events. Only one of Afghanistan and Nepal being able to qualify while Tanzania got in by beating Sierra Leone in the regional final and Japan snuck past PNG really does not reflect the reality of Under 19 cricket.

Yeah, I absolutely get your point. The passion and the numbers are there for Nepal compared to the other regional qualifiers from Americas, Australasia/Asia, Europe & Africa.

But they obviously restricted to 16 teams. Nepal always qualified for U19 CWC until Afghanistan rocked up in 2010.

All test nations should automatically qualify.

That East Asia- Pacific qualifying route must surely be the weakest compared to Asia, Africa, Europe and Americas so would be the only avenue?

Yes I think the way to resolve this should actually be to have another mini tournament between Asia #2, Europe #2, Africa #1 and East-Asia Pacific #1 to determine the two places that this time went straight to Africa #1 and EAP #1. That would have been Nepal, Netherlands, Tanzania and Japan in a tournament.

If that was too expensive which may be a valid complaint, I'd rather just merge Asia-Pacific into one big regional qualifier and let two in from that, which would have just likely meant Nepal ahead of Japan here.

Molehill

International Coach
I reckon there's at least 5 (possibly 6) S Africans there who went on to play International Cricket for other countries. (Trott, Kieswetter, Van der Merwe, Elliot, Lumb and maybe Engelbrecht too?)

Got to laugh at the likes of Samit, Bopara, Christian, Henriques still just about hitting it from the early 2000's.

That 2008 World Cup was stupid........Kohli, Jadeja, Smith, Kane, Hazlewood, Boult, Southee.........and of course the biggest name of them all, Woakes!!

A really strong WC in Malaysia was it. India v South Africa final. Kohli v Parnell. Still frustrated me Parnell never lived up to his potential. Rossouw in many ways as well.

In typing this I missed that Afghanistan was a Test side and shouldn't have to qualify anyway!

They should do

12 Test sides

Plus...

One Asia-Pacific (probably usually Nepal)
One Europe (probably usually Scotland)
One Africa (probably usually Namibia)
One Americas (probably usually USA)

If they wanted to be extra fair they could let the second place AP and Europe (probably Netherlands, or Scotland if they lost) play in the a tournament with the Africa and America winners for the final two spots, but they could skip that if it was too pricey.

I also thought Afghanistan qualified automatically reading your original post so I was wondering how Nepal missed out to Japan. But then clicked when you said Japan played PNG

Its a world cup not the Asian cup.

Bullshit.
So you would like to see the football world cup with only European and South American teams...

A world cup has 2 elements. The strong teams trying to win it and the romantic teams who just getting there is their world cup victory. Both are part of world cups and create the magic.
