Sachin has Adolf Hitler, Emperor Hirohito, Joseph Stalin and Benito Mussolini to thank, they are the only reason Hutton didn't end up as the third best test batsman ever.

Gavaskar was famous but his fame was dependant more on newspapers and radio.
The Bombay tournaments drew good crowds from around 1913. The Bombay Gymkhana ground held 15,000 and often exceeded capacity.

Indian newspapers (Bombay Chronicle and Times of India) began covering cricket in a big way during the late 1920s with plenty of photos. Radio followed in the 1930s.

Cricket in India had been reported by the British press since the end of the nineteenth century.

Interestingly, and somewhat surprisingly to me, when ranking the great septet of the 1990-2015 quarter century, Narayanan matches Kimber's recent effort by also placing Ponting and Waugh as the bottom two. Kimber ranked them:

Tendulkar
Lara
Kallis
Sangakkara
Dravid
Ponting
Waugh

Narayan has them:

Lara
Sangakkara
Tendulkar
Kallis
Dravid
Ponting
Waugh

Narayan rated Sanga/Root ahead of Tendulkar/Smith....don't take him seriously
