*Official* 5th Test (Sydney) 4-8 January

I'm sure the players wanted to win, even in the dead rubber tests. It's just the way they go about it is, all too often, unlikely to see them achieve said aim.
Not the impression I get from some of their statements publicly concerning the WTC.
The impression from the outside is they only care for test series against aus and India and then world cups.
Maybe that is just a perception.

I agree with you. They always say everything is planning towards the next Ashes.Even now some of the media are asking whether or not x or y will be in the next Ashes squad.Forget that and concentrate on NZ.

There's also the possibility you just over-rated the England side, which isn't so much an under-performance as it just a skill issue.

There's also the fact that winning in Australia is extraordinarily hard. If the teams are evenly matched the the home ground advantage usually sees Australia win comfortably unless you're South Africa.

I'm not sure the issues with English cricket can really be addressed until they stop obsessing over this series so much every cycle. It's almost treated how teams treat a World Cup cycle in ODIs. It's just not healthy, especially given winning a five Test series in Australia is extraordinarily difficult so the obsession just sets up for so much failure and disappointment.
This is completely true. They are just a bang average cricket side. I mean would anyone from that pace attack be in the top 15 quicks in the world and they don't have a spinner like how tf you expect to win in places like Australia and India with this rabble? Most of the England pundits and fans are just delusional blaming everything under the sun for four straight serieses now against Aust and India when the truth is 75% of their team are mediocre players and have very few good ones.

Can't buy a donkey and expect it to be a race horse

True but the culture/planning etc doesn't help. They are not getting the best out of the players regardless of their ability.

You can win on Australia without a spinner as Australia showed in this series, where Lyon was a bit part player.

As for England being overrated- there probably is some truth in that.

But every pundit that I heard before the series - from Aus, England and elsewhere, predicted the series would be pretty close.

It was just us that thought it would be a close series.

Pretty sure there were a bunch of predictions from ex players of Australia winning 4-0, 4-1 and McGrath predicted a 5-0.

It means something to all the other sides. Which is why they take all tests seriously. The mentality England have for the WTC reflects in their attitude at crucial points in games that matter.
Nah it's all cope because they keep losing. "Yeah well we don't care about it anyway " waaaaah

What were the scoops in the Torygraph? I saw some stuff on twitter but I'm not subscribing. Sounds like general t***ts on tour stuff.

Brook got caught having an argument with a doorman outside a nightclub in the NZ 1 day tour before the Ashes. They were playing the next day.
He was warned and fined £30k by the ECB.

He was warned, then according to the same article, spent 6 days in a row drinking in Noosa. I know that's not stonecold proof, but that's the general consensus of what happened on their post 2nd Test sojourn.

People can defend drinking all they want but it's pretty well accepted and proven now that alcohol inhibits everything you'd want to have in top gear to win something as challenging as the Ashes. It's really not much of a coincidence that Mitchell Starc has six weeks off the piss then wins man of the series, while Harry Brook has 3 months on it and bats like a ****wit.

yep alcohol inhibits athletic performance.i do wonder what time he was out as he was trying to get into a nightclub.also how much must he have drunk to get into an altercation with a doorman?

It’s a snapshot of a mindset. A pro would be in bed, trying to be the best he could be the next day, regardless of the format or context. Brook persuaded himself it didn’t matter. He’s got a massive amount of growing up to do. As I said earlier in the series, England needs him to be the new Root - the guy they lean on to lead the batting and be as consistent as possible

They should be doing things that enhance athletic performance, like coke
Would be an interesting study.

I may have posted this before, but about 30 years ago we went into a semi final against the top dogs we hadn't beaten in about three years. A bloke in our team, who was a particularly gifted cricketer in any event, had a line of speed before he went out to bat with the score at 3/25.

He made 138 off 84 balls, including 11 sixes, one of which he hit so far from a leggie's quicker ball that it went over a factory next to the ground and someone drove their car over to the next street to get it.

Next day I believe he repeated the dose and took five wickets, as we won by 12 runs.
