Not really because Bumrah's replacement would be another fast bowler (Siraj/Krishna/others).

This statement makes more sense for Hardik Pandya as his replacement (Reddy) is way too poor for a regular bowling option. Can try Dube but it will be hard for him to make an impact in the 50-over format.
Damn! Those guys can't replace Bumrah- please Siraj is worse than an off-peak Agarkar. Krishna is following in his footsteps. Dube can't bowl. Might be better to try out Tyagi or even Sandeep Sharma at the national level.

I am talking about if we need a bowler for bilaterals to fill Bumrah's place. Forgot to mention Arshdeep.

You want a 32 year old uncapped pacer to get included in our ODI plans out of nowhere? And Tyagi's numbers don't look impressive enough for an India call-up.

You would use the bilaterals to build the side up for the World Cup, right? Tyagi has been promising in his bowling and so has Sharma. If the current setup cannot deliver, one needs to look beyond. Age is not a concern tbh. As I have previously alluded to, our fast bowling stocks have depleted since Laxman took over the NCA- thereby, one has to go by some names that impress in their bowling.

Siraj hasn't really got a consistent run in ODIs since the 2023 WC ended. He has been economical in the last 2 series but hasn't picked much wickets. I do agree about Krishna being not good enough. Both Tyagi and Sharma - you are just basing their "promising" bowling on what you saw in the IPL. I wouldn't really equate IPL performances with ODIs. Ideally, need to perform in VHT and SMAT as well.

If it were upto me, Siraj would be out of reckoning. I have never once seen him perform under pressure and we saw how badly he sucks in the IPL as well. The sole reason DC got close that Miller game was Siraj and his wonderful bowling.

Siraj has clearly lost that zip in his bowling. He can still bowl in the right areas but his threat has decreased a lot. Harshit Rana, on the other hand, has a knack of producing the wicket taking deliveries but is unable to keep the run rate in check. Too early to dismiss Siraj out of the WC race. I feel Arshdeep can be the powerplay wicket-taker we have been missing.

India's bowling lineup if no injuries:

6) Pandya
7) Axar
8) Harshit
9) Kuldeep
10) Arshdeep
11) Bumrah
Very long tail tbh. I'd probably not have Kuldeep in the playing XI. Instead would look at an all-rounder. Presently, only Dube fits the bill, but he needs to tighten his bowling.

That's batting till number 8. You can't be asking for more because that would be a serious compromise on bowling. How often the number 9 actually gets to bat?

I think only WI and ENG have capable bats at number 9 and these two are among the worst bowling attacks at present.

I don't consider Harshit as a genuine all rounder. He has not done anything worthy of being called an all-round tbh. Ditto with NTR Reddy or whatever his name is. Axar is again a bits and pieces player- wouldn't categorize him as an allrounder either. In all honesty, Washington's batting is far superior than these guys combined. Add Washi there instead of Harshit it might still work.

Furthermore, you wouldn't surely play this line up in SA. Axar and Kuldeep both, might not be required. There's space for only one person in the side there.

Gambhir is definitely playing Harshit Rana.

If Harshit plays at 9, who plays at 6,7,8?

This is probably the only other combination.

6) Pandya
7) Sundar
8) Axar
9) Harshit/another pacer
10) Arshdeep
11) Bumrah

I'd pick neither in white ball cricket. Siraj is still 32 and has a big role to play in our test cricket. Same with Rana, he has very good potential in tests. Fitting Siraj and Rana in limited overs games seems baffling to me, they look like they are neither here nor there at times. Look at how Anderson improved even more once his focussed moved purely to test cricket.

Need to look at other options for ODIs and T20s, Arshdeep and Bumrah are locked, need to create 2-3 options for the 3rd seamer role + injury backups. Prince Yadav looks like a solid pick for me. Not sure if Shivam Mavi is fit but he is a pretty good 3rd seamer who can bat a bit.

This is the silliest reason I can think of not playing someone in a format. Just because Siraj is more important in Tests doesn't mean he should be kept out of the white ball scene. At the end of the day, you need the best players available to win the big tournaments.

And Rana has improved so much. It would be idiotic to leave him now. Besides, we already have Nabi to play in Tests.

I dont think anyone claims Harshit is an AR, even he himself. But he is that rare commodity in Indian cricket, the fast bowler who can bat.

All our players take part in the IPL for 2-3 months in a year and the schedule is packed outside of that as well. No better time to have specialists from a workload management POV. Siraj is good with the new ball but ineffective in the middle overs and death.

In overs 41-50, he has just 13 wickets in 25 games with an economy of 7.65. If you play Siraj, he'll either be your 1st or 2nd seamer because he can't bat or field. And we can't have a 1st/2nd seamer who can't bowl at the death.

Rana gets absolutely smashed when the conditions don't support him(which will be the case in ODIs and T20s more often than not). No question he has improved, but he has an economy of 10+ in T20s and 6+ in ODIs. We can't risk a bowler in ICC knock-outs who can give the game on a platter to the opposition. He can still be a decent pick for the 3rd bowler slot if we have Hardik around as a backup.
