McLaren only pitted Piastri first to cover Leclerc behind. Norris agreed on team radio to Piastri pitting ahead of him as long as there was no undercut. His race engineer confirmed there would be no undercut.
Actually, pitting Piastri first was Norris' own idea, going by the radio communication.

I know Piastri has said he’ll go with what the team wants and that’s him. I think with the constructors wrapped up after the next GP and if it gets any closer things won’t be so nice.

If Norris hadn’t DNF’d last week do we think Piastri still swaps?

I think he does yeah, but he probably shouldn't. What's interesting is that let's say it gets down to the last 1-2 races and the points are quite close for both, do the drivers then swap in a similar situation?

No. Team orders would go out the window in that situation.

See Abu Dhabi 2016 where Lewis was trying to back Nico into the pack behind him and was told to hurry up to protect Nico's 2nd place. Lewis basically told them he didn't give a **** because that didn't benefit him in the slightest.

a more conspiracy minded person might say it was a smart move from Norris and his engineer: if he pits first and there's a slow stop, then that's just bad luck

not me. i just find it funny

If Piastri had had a slow stop, would Norris have had to give back 4 seconds? All a bit daft and highlights the perils of having 2 closely matched drivers in the team.

Yeah, McLaren look like dorks but at the end of the day the constructors and drivers standings will stand.

Finding a Barrichello or Coulthard who is both better than most of the drivers but comfortably worse than your other driver is very hard. Only Red Bull have that luxury atm and they fluffed it with their broken ****ing car and mid second driver options (bar Hadjar).

Can’t wait for Perez to beat Hadjar next year lol

Oh me too, but it’d just be hilarious if Red Bull can still only have a good car for Max with the new regs.
I'm not convinced they even have that. Max is going through his Schumacher at Ferrari 1996-98 era where he's doing things with a car that nobody else could do.

The fairness thing is kind of irrelevant.

McLaren only pitted Piastri first to cover Leclerc behind. Norris agreed on team radio to Piastri pitting ahead of him as long as there was no undercut. His race engineer confirmed there would be no undercut.

The loose wheel nut delayed Norris' pit stop by ~4s bringing the undercut into play.

If Norris pits first, has a slow pit and Piastri overcuts next lap then I don't think they swap.
Don't think it was as altruistic as being portrayed.

Lando wanted to stay out longer to possibly take advantage of a potential safety car.

That was all on him, and didn't deserve the swap.

Pathetic from McLaren
