Favourite 'grinding' knock of all time...

Dazinho

I've always appreciated the different skillsets of the longer form of the game and that 'slow knock' is harder to play than some would first think.

Just looked up an old scorecard from a test match where Derek Pringle banged out 45 from 237 balls. What a lad!!

Being English another belter was Jack Russell's assist to the Atherton knock in SA, wasn't he like 30 not out of 235 balls and on 25 for an hour?

For a proper grind we're looking at a significant score (say 40 or more) at a very low scoring rate (gotta be less than 35 per 100, probably 25 per 100 would be an elite grinder cut off).

So...who were the masters of the grind? And the best grind innings of all time.

ABD against Ashwin Jadeja and then Johnson and Harris.

Once watched Mitch McClenaghan score 40 off 160 balls - batting at 4 - to deny Cornwall a two-day championship, while actively laughing at their inability to get him out. That was my favourite.

Danny Morrison's 14* off 133 to save that Test is up there.

Or Geoff Allott's 0 off 77 balls.

Dean Elgar's 86* of 240 (Carrying the bat) comes to mind: https://www.espncricinfo.com/series...rica-vs-india-3rd-test-1122278/full-scorecard

Is there any estimate of how many balls were faced during Hanif Mohammed's 337?
Funnily enough, that’s the only test of the series without complete Ball by Ball data.

Some extra info.

Davis does do an EQB (Equivalent balls faced) stat for significant scores of 50+, based on the time players were at the crease, the over rate, and an assumption of 50% of balls faced. Using this for Hanif comes out to 926 apparently.

Sobers’ famous 365* a few tests later by comparison was scored off 575 balls.

My two favourite defensive knocks
In recent times

1. Hanuma Vihari : 23 off 161 balls
Against Starc, Cummins, Hazelwood & Lyon
It helped us draw the match in Sydney

2. ABD : 43 off 297 balls vs Ashwin & Jadeja
Seeing an explosive batsman play an ultra defensive knock on Day 5 turner in India was special.
