English Domestic Season 2026

This Sub rule is getting crazy with a pace bowler in the squad not being allowed to replace another pace bowler. I read that the match referee decision that they were not "like-for-like" was based on Record/stats.

Dale - 41 games, 104 wkts @ 35.81
(417 runs @ 11.58)

Bailey - 125 games, 433 wkts @ 24.71
(2678 runs @ 18.59)

Surely the fact that Dale was in the XI and Bailey wasn't means that despite their records Dale was considered the better bowler for this match?
Doesn't take in the current need for rotation. Lancs played ASD, Bailey, Anderson and Balderson in match 1, Stanley, Coughlin, Anderson & Bailey in match 2, and originally selected Anderson, ASD, Balderson and Coughlin in match 3. Whether that is right on a match by match basis, that is what is behind their selection policy, as we know rotation is supposed to help bowlers last the whole season.

Lancs have 9 pace in their squad the six named above plus Aspinwall and Blatherwick currently both "in rehab" after injuries, which leaves Sutton.

There are loads of Bailey-alikes in county cricket who take stacks of wickets at under 25 each season and are never in contention for England because they don't bowl fast enough. See also Ben Sanderson, Ollie Hannon-Dalby, Jamie Porter, Chris Rushworth, Lewis Gregory, etc. Going back further you had the likes of David Masters and Alan Richardson.

In the case of Bailey I think the selectors are right, he is a 75mph trundler who's skilful and deadly on English wickets but I can't imagine him having much success in India or Australia.

I'm wondering if this substitution was denied because Bailey is considered an all-rounder whereas ASD is an out and out bowler?
An allrounder with a career average of 18? Both he and ASD average between 10 and 20.

Peter Such the Referee needs to admit his mistake. If only on the basis that Bailey is a closer like-for-like than Sutton is, who has played one first class game and so is nowhere need the level of ASD.

Zafar Gohar hits a brisk 83 and then decides he isn't fit to take the field, so Middlesex substitute him for Luke Hollman. On the strength of Hollman's two overs so far I think Northants will be delighted.

why are there only 8 teams playing in this round?
All sides miss one match in the first seven weeks.

I suspect medical advice is that teams can't play 6 games back to back in 6 weeks as players would not be able to play at 100% without a rest.

Some counties play play 2 miss 1 and play 4, others the reverse. Better than all missing the same week?

This thread isn't normally pinned.

Where it belongs and around the same length as the IPL thread since that started

Smeed brought in as the replacement opener last week but has yet to do the job
Yeah I decided it made sense to pin it for people who wanted to follow red ball cricket at this time of year given noone plays Tests during IPL season anymore, especially since the County Championship has lots of overseas players that people from their home countries like to follow.

I may unpin it before it's over if it starts competing with a bunch of international tour threads though.

Maybe Bailey wasn't fully fit at the start of the match and wasn't risked, but recovered a bit in the days that followed and they were comfortable bringing him in for the end of the game?

Very weird situation anyway. As ataraxia said the march officials have basically deemed the Lancs selectors are stupid.

Dale pulled his hammy after 2 overs, so game was only 4 overs old when they tried to sub in Bailey

I bet if we paused the subs rule for a round players would magically remain fit.
Not sure that would be the case for either Dale and Wells. The latter is the latest to need a replacement with what looked like a dislocated shoulder.

Without this new sub rule Lancs would be chasing 200-300 on the last day with a batting line up of 9.

Well given that the Shield is only six teams and there are eight teams in the division above the one McSweeney is playing in, that's not really surprising.
10 teams above actually, and there is a noticeable difference in quality between the two too. Which makes it even funnier that Crawley cannot buy a run in Div 2.
