English Domestic Season 2026

I flick through all the matches on youtube here in Australia, like to have a look at all counties.
Wouldn't want to pay anything to be honest.
I can see why they want to do it, their coverage is excellent (Lancashire), but other counties who basically just have the camera pointed to the square , ie Sussex, you wouldn't want to be paying for that.
I thought Sussex's was bad until I saw Leics. The camera position was so low you couldn't actually see over the umpire's head for lbw decisions!!

Just announced that Ollie Sutton will replace Ajeet Singh-Dale who pulled up at the start of his second over holding the back of the top of his leg.

Sutton currently playing 2nd XI cricket at Grace Road, presumably has been pulled from that match and is on his way to Bristol. Hasn't batted yet despite Lancs 2s being 6 down.

Lancs must have chosen not to replace ASD with either Bailey or Stanley who were both in the original squad, Bailey is certainly at Bristol. It must be at their preference and they (or their medical team) have decided both Bailey and Stanley both need a rest after the game against Derbyshire.

Those two must be knackered, Bailey bowled 31 overs & Stanley 33 over FOUR days against Derby.
Seriously, medical science has a lot to answer for.
But a 43 yr old managed 33 overs last week and is playing.

Dale, of course, was rested last week.

Doesn't it seem as though the opposition refused to allow Lancashire to replace ASD with Bailey? This rule, if it must be applied, should allow a 15 man squad - four spare players to cover batters, bowlers and keepers. If a player is legitimately injured, they can select the replacement of their choice. None of this stupid bussing a guy over from three hundred miles away.

Yeah not sure if its the opposition or the umpires but Lancs requested Bailey as the replacement and were denied. So instead of replacing a Right handed fast medium bowler with a right handed fast medium bowler hes been replaced by a left arm all rounder.

Seems completely ridiculous

Do the 2s have the sub rule too?

Caught the end of the day’s play at Southampton, Rew was Root-esque by coming in early under a bit of pressure only to play a lovely unbeaten 77 to close the day

2nds have a full sub role for years allowing players who were called up to first team duty to be fully substituted. They play with 12 (11 to bat and field) anyway in multi-day games. Lancs in this case pulled Shetty but did not replace him thinking that the other 11 would cover for the last 2 days. There would be no way that Sutton's departure from the game would be covered for two sessions. They played with 10 to bat with the coach fielding as an old fashioned 12th man.

Can't find the rules for the new full substitution, they are not specified in the recent ECB FAQs but the rules for concussion subs say that the Match Referee approves the like-for-likeness. Don't believe the opposition would have asay other than their medical team must agree with the injury / illness diagnosis.

The commentators were speculating more or less incessently in the morning and after lunch. Lancashire have subsquently (3 hours ago so after close of play, just before 6pm) confirmed on twitter that Bailey was refused as a like-for-like and later just before 9pm that Stanley had had a back spasm in the morning ruling him out although he was in the original squad.

The referee might have done us all a favour by bringing the concept into further disrepute. The only possibilities appear to be that the referee's view that Bailey was too experienced and / or simply a better bowler. Like-for-like but not an improvement? I wonder if the ECB gave referees guidelines?

If Bailey was truly a better bowler why was he not starting - no certainty that ASD was going to pull a hammy so had he stayed fit, presumably Lancs were at a disadvantage - it's weird logic.

Kent's reputation for signing brittle South African bowlers continues. Stuurmann is injured and won't play for them again. Kent and their penetrative attack say not to worry as Matt Quinn and Mikey Cohen can come in.....

This Sub rule is getting crazy with a pace bowler in the squad not being allowed to replace another pace bowler. I read that the match referee decision that they were not "like-for-like" was based on Record/stats.

Dale - 41 games, 104 wkts @ 35.81
(417 runs @ 11.58)

Bailey - 125 games, 433 wkts @ 24.71
(2678 runs @ 18.59)

Surely the fact that Dale was in the XI and Bailey wasn't means that despite their records Dale was considered the better bowler for this match?

How come Bailey never played for England?
Because there are a boat load of seamers in CC that never got a look in due to Jimmy/Broad.

Chris Rushworth would have had England honours for example in another era. His 15/95 was a sight to behold was gutted he didn't get the 10 in one of the innings.

England became too obsessed with pace and couldn't find room for more than one Jimmy. Woakes being a good batsman gave him a leg up over all the other seamers of a similar or older age.

There are loads of Bailey-alikes in county cricket who take stacks of wickets at under 25 each season and are never in contention for England because they don't bowl fast enough. See also Ben Sanderson, Ollie Hannon-Dalby, Jamie Porter, Chris Rushworth, Lewis Gregory, etc. Going back further you had the likes of David Masters and Alan Richardson.

In the case of Bailey I think the selectors are right, he is a 75mph trundler who's skilful and deadly on English wickets but I can't imagine him having much success in India or Australia.

I'm wondering if this substitution was denied because Bailey is considered an all-rounder whereas ASD is an out and out bowler?
