English Domestic Season 2026

That Surrey top 5 looked so strong on paper. Hope Warks have Woakes fit for most of the CC. Gay gets the first 100 of the CC but theres no room for him in the england setup as Bethel has the gig at no3.
I’ve always though the roles of opener and number 3 are pretty interchangeable anyway, both Gay and McKinney do both roles for Durham and the Lions, I don’t think a ton for Gay at 3 (in an innings in which he came in early after McKinney got out for 8) will do his chances any harm even if the vacancy will be as an opener

Pope and Bethell have been opening more or less for England so no problem if Gay does it for real.

Good to see Essex in a decent position after day one having lost Elgar, Walter and Mulder all cheaply, and of course Wesley retired hurt. The reliable Critchley and the massively exciting talent of Allison with an unbroken 152-run partnership steadying the ship.

It’ll be a challenge for Allison with it being his second season and teams now familiar with his style, great that he’s started so positively, hopefully can go on again today.

Blimey. I didn't realise it was that bad
Crap temporary scaffolding purporting to be a sightscreen and camera gantry fell down

Coupled with one of the covers blowing the into stand and making the pitch wet.

Only Durham would manage such a feat when looking like they could push for a win.

gusts of winds were strong last night.

Meanwhile further South Lancashire proving why they might well struggle to achieve promotion.
Dale: 1-43 from 15, Hartley: 0-46 from 16, Balderson: 0-36 from 11, Wells: 0-14 from 6 all leading to a 10th wicket partnership of over 50.

They will struggle to bowl Northants out tomorrow even with a current lead of 144 with Northants playing specialist batsmen at nos. 7 (Bartlett) and 9 (Kimber) even if they manage to declare which I can't see happening.

Cricket being cricket took over before lunch:
Lancashire lose a second wicket after 7.2 overs in comes a new batsmen who is out first ball and they all troop off for lunch. Was it not the last over before lunch after 7.2 overs??

Two stunning catches by Northants players.

A bit of a risk to pick players who have finished their southern hemisphere domestic season within a week of the County Championship season starting to say the least!
Nathan McSweeney played in the same as Marcus Harris (and Mitch Perry). McSweeney playing for Northants, Harris absent for Lancashire.

Although I suspect the even if they had both been on the same flight, the much heralded Lancashire medical staff would have ruled that Harris needed to rest.

This post may not age well, but Lancashire's performance on the pitch today will not make the Members happy at the two SGMs next week.

Currently in the balance, but to be honest, Northants on paper are not one of the leading lights of the division, I think Lancashire will need to show more to get promotion

Erm, quite the game for Matt Critchley. 173 with the bat and 6-9 with the ball. That’s just daft.
