English Domestic Season 2026

State Vice-Captain
Lancashire lose Mitch Perry

Does that iupset pre-season predictions?
Lancashire's response (Mark Chilton quoted in the Mail):
"Director of cricket Mark Chilton has spent the past 48 hours trying to source a quality replacement for Perry, but a call to New Zealand coach Rob Walter proved fruitless due to the Black Caps’ upcoming limited-overs series against Bangladesh, while Cricket Australia’s restrictions on bowlers has severely impacted the availability of a relatively small pool."

Did they not look at the international fixture list before making that phone call?

The article continues:
‘We're not just going to get someone to fill a spot,' says Anderson. 'It's got to be someone who we think could add value to the team - and we've got an incredibly strong squad.'
Such a statement is at odds with the evidence of a 2025 season in which Lancashire failed to win any of their first eight Division Two matches, ...."

Agree with all of that, completely. Still leaves Stanley of Lions fame and Aspinwall (Eng U19s) as back up plus Ollie Sutton. But given that both the IPL & the PSL are underway and with New Zealand playing ODIs in Bangladesh surely anyone who is worth it is already signed up by someone else.
Zak Foulkes is the one to sign up. Anderson and Foulkes sharing the new ball could've been a winner. Foulkes a real weapon against Test top-order left-handers.

He could probably offer a 30+ ave with the bat in Div 2 county, as the real cherry on top. A good sensible (slightly too front-foot dominant) bat.

1st wicket and its a run out and its Rory Burns
Yeah, something of a ****-up by Burns for that one.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Surrey's selection is 18 year old Ralphie Albert who, in case any here is unaware, is the grandson of snooker ledgend Jimmy White.

Meanwhile, Jamie Smith has carried on where he left off in the winter. A couple of pretty fours and out.

Very loose it seems

Yeah, he didn't need to play the shot at all. Playing a defensive push at such a wide delivery was pointless, and sure enough he nicked it. Burns and Smith both gifting their wickets so far.

Interesting to see Smith batting at 3 actually. I admire the intent, but I don't know that his technique is good enough to be batting there.

I don't particularly rate Jamie Smith but sending him in at three is setting him up to fail. Doesn't have anywhere near a tight enough technique or soft enough hands to deal with the early moving ball.

He normally has batted at 4 for Surrey while Foakes takes the globes so it's surely not that different.

Just think England have given him to free of a reign and it's knackered his technique.

Gay closing in on a century doing his test chances no harm. Crawley playing in the same game.
He was the most boom or bust player last season. 5 tons and 7 ducks across CC and One Day formats and only the one half century.

A very good knock today. Few teams have fallen for bowling first at CLS in recent years not the same bowl first ground it once was.

That Surrey top 5 looked so strong on paper. Hope Warks have Woakes fit for most of the CC. Gay gets the first 100 of the CC but theres no room for him in the england setup as Bethel has the gig at no3.
