Yes! People just concentrate on the attributes of the player they want to pick, but ignore any opportunity cost. The drop off from Atkinson-Robinson-Archer-Tongue to any of the seam bowling all-rounders is huge. The drop off from Bashir to Ahmed? Not quite such a gulf… and improves the batting enormously.

He's 32 so not a shiny enough toy.

I am quite worried about Root. Perhaps his eyes may be going? His dismissals are becoming rather predictable.

He got a good ball on a surface doing plenty, not sure it’s time to panic about his form

With the series won and England having no chance to make the WTC final, maybe it’s time to give another bowler a go, but in the medium term, these four pacers have to play whenever possible. I think the only places up for grabs are Gay’s and Lawrence’s, Gay you feel needs a score at Edgbaston, and while Lawrence has done quite well with the bat, I think going forward we’ll need a proper 5th bowling option

I genuinely wonder who on earth England go to to open if the ditch Gay. Back to Crawley? Pick Pope again and make one of him or Lawrence open too?
