On the subject of players, with Curran now confirmed to be unavailable for the whole series, does that change the makeup of this squad? The pitch spun a fair bit even on day 2, Bashir in for Lawrence would leave a long tail, but at the same time we do have a number of spin bowling all-rounders who could come in bat in the top 7 and play much more of a role with the ball

IDK the 6 batter-keeper-4 bowler lineup worked fine in the first test. Lawrence and Cox also made runs at 3 and 6 so would be harsh to drop them to "balance the side".

Stokes was a once in a generation allrounder/cricketer ala Botham and Flintoff. Think England can afford to go without an allrounder until Rehan/Curran/whoever put together a good enough body of work in red ball to suggest they can do it.

Think Jamie Smiths form also needs to be considered here. He's been short of runs relative to what you'de expect from a number 6. Think England's allrounder needs to be good enough to bat 6 right now; Not worth pushing smith back to 6 and weakining the batting to fit Rehan etc at 7.

In this instance, it worked because the seamers had so much success (aided by helpful conditions and a woeful Pakistan performance), in the next Test and going forward I don’t think it’ll be that easy

It’s one thing for, say, a county jobber with no chance of getting into the England squad getting involved in these shenanigans, but Carse is on the fringes and has just seen his rivals rip through Pakistan, not exactly the best way to convince them! @flibbertyjibber any suspicion of any wrongdoing from Potts?

No idea. Just ridiculous so soon after that Stokes/Atkinson incident though. Carse is in cuffs, Potts is wandering about and Stokes is playing hide and seek

Agreed. Think it's probably best for English cricket if he's banned for life.

Just one thing to ask re the pace attack. With Robinson, Atkinson, Archer and Tongue now the men in possession, is this the best balanced England bowling line up for some time? I know we have just lost Stokes who has clearly been one of the best 4th seamers in world cricket for some time, but on existing records and overall performance this looks a decent lineup to me although how it balances moving forward, especially when there might be a need for a spinner is another matter.

Was there ever a point where 2019 peak archer played a test where anderson and broad played? Would take those three + stokes at that point over the current 4 man attack.

No, because Anderson was injured that summer and did get back playing until some time after. Archer then got ruined in NZ later that year by Root and only played here and there before being out of test cricket for the best part of four years. There were some good combos in 2023 with the pace attack including Wood and Woakes with the latter being a gun in England at least but this looks the best balanced to me for quite a while otherwise. We have had Carse for a fair amount of time and even the likes of Hull and Jamie Overton play here and there which has obviously been nuts.
