England players and selection discussion thread

Eurgh, Bashir back in the side, Atkinson or Baker for the last seamer spot.
As Molehill suggested on the NZ tour thread, given the weather now and forecast for the next few days, might it make sense to play the 4 specialist seamers with a few perfunctory overs for Bethell and Root? Not going to be much in it for the spinner, especially if there are the predicted rain delays.

yes seems daft, but as they didnt play bash in the ashes, theyr clearly determined to give him a test now. Just gotta hope that Gus is fully fit and not still seeing stars. Baker just sprays the ball either side of the wkt the times i've seen him.

There is just zero clarity in this England set up now. Whether it's picking a Lions Squad, having a clear plan for IPL players, gaining the necessary prep for Test Matches, putting players in the right mindset for success, there is just nothing which makes sense. It's an utter mess and Key's head should be the first to roll.

They've picked a strong side for the 50 overs, many of which would be next cabs, though Noah Cornwell has a List A bowling average of 60.

I understand SA actually complained about the standard of team we put out for the 'Tests'.

But again, it just shows complete confusion and a lack of consistency about what they're trying to achieve. I'm not sure Key could get drunk in a brewery.

It’s strange how Cornwell has got a Lions gig in 50 over cricket; his FC and T20 averages are good whereas his List A average is poor. Torn between thinking that it’s a damning indictment on what is close to a genuine second string England team to get beaten like that, and thinking that they were always going to lose with how little 50 over cricket they actually play

I reckon if we had this squad for the FC series it would have been more competitive, apart from Mayes (who did hit a ton in the FC series but who is 18 years old) and Cornwell, it genuinely wouldn't be a surprise to see any of this lot in an England squad if we pick up any injuries, the issue is that they play such little List A cricket, South Africa A have played over twice as many List A games compared to the Lions (587-258)
