England players and selection discussion thread

I thought Penny is fit ATM, so its odd hes been jettisoned. They also seem to have given up on John Turner or perhaps hes injured again. Scrimshaw has trouble even getting through a game without injury for northpants, so hes hardly played, very few wkts, so its surprise hes omitted given what seems the selection criteria. But they clearly rate Baker, despite his recents perfs, as hes in both squads for the NZ tour.

The Lions shouldn't be a squad of bowlers barely out of nappies. There are plenty of good bowlers out there - Cook, Pennington, let alone Hill, etc. - who you'd need if things went sour in the Ashes. I would not want Jack or Stanley playing.
To be fair, with two entire squads, the less experienced players in the Lions squad won't get anywhere near an actual Test match, Archer, Atkinson, Carse, Tongue and Wood will rotate as first choice, Potts is next off the block, and then out of the Lions squad, Baker and Fisher seem like the most likely to get into the main squad. I'll be honest, I don't think the management are really thinking of having an experienced 10th choice bowler just in case we are absolutely ravaged with injuries. On this topic, I'm a little surprised Fisher has been brought in considering there seems to have been very little hype around him since his one and only Test match, don't hate it though

Exactly! Some of these choices don’t quite add up, but I guess they’re trying to test depth before the tour.

Apart from Moeen Ali (who was still a handier bowler than Bethell is now when he was starting out), how many players have started their career as a specialist batter and ended it as an all-rounder?
Dipak Patel, and Glenn Phillips.

Could also maybe make an argument for this being Phil Simmons by the early 90s.

But Oram, as already suggested, would be the best example I can think of. A guy with zero bowling loads growing up / developing, basically.

Yeah, I was surprised too.

Apparently they are going to manage Archer by having him sit out all the rest of the matches in NZ. They say its not injury related. Be interesting to see exactly which of the bowlers they are going to risk before they go to Oz.

Bit surprised Phil Salt only given a one year central contract.

Bethell (2 year), Baker, Dawson, Mahmood, Luke Wood all newly centrally contracted. Stanley, Jack and Lawes first development contracts.

Leach, Topley, Stone, Bairstow, Livingstone and Woakes dropped and Turner loses development status.

The odd one there for me is Livingstone. He's only just turned 32, and at his best ought to make England sides. I guess the issue is that his best is so rarely seen. Will be interesting to see how he goes in the Franchises and whether strong performances might get him recognition.

I guess Baker is the new Turner.

Duckett gets a 2 year contract and Crawley gets a 1 year.
Archer a 2 year contract and M Wood a 1 year

Pope 1 year as well. It is very understandable that Wood gets one year. He is nearly 36 after all. You could almost read it as Pope and Crawley being on notice. Well, you would hope so.

Liam Dawson finally getting a contract at 35 was a surprise to me, he's had a strange arc with the England selectors. Baker getting a full contract rather than a developmental one could be seen as a bit fortunate too given his start in international cricket.

Once you've shown them something they like, it's hard to get dropped.

I'd show them my stash of Titleist Golf balls!!

Is Dawson just on a white ball deal, because after Old Trafford his hopes of getting back into the Test team seem remote

England will likely debut a fast bowler in the Ashes. Just wait. Everything that can go wrong will go wrong. They'll lose 5 or 4 nil.

Expect a Jafar Chouhan test debut in the fifth game as well.

Ashes series often end people's international careers. The one remaining question maybe who doesn't feature again after this latest lost contest?

Do they start at the top with Key? Who else?

That wont age well if England win the next three tests after Lyon and Cummins return.
