Does cricket need a strong Pakistan?

In all seriousness this is by far the weakest Pakistani team I can remember. What can they do to turn things around?

It absolutely does. I thought with late August start and a hot, dry summer(though it was wet and overcast this week), it is Pakistan's best opportunity to compete. It's not your token 2 match series in May where Asian teams get rolled over in cold, blustery conditions. So pretty disappointing performance to say the least.

More than anything it was lack of fight that made me sad. Pakistan teams have always been mercurial and batting collapses are not far away. Even when they drew here in 2016, they lost pretty badly at Edgbaston, there's the famous 59 and 53 all out against Australia back in the day and many other similar occurrences. But none of the those teams looked as hapless as this one. There's not a single player that I am excited to watch, it's true across formats and even among the younger ones.

It's like cricket is going backwards following the route of hockey or squash. With time there's need for new heroes. Imran's magic is fading away, he single handedly put Pakistan cricket 20 years ahead but incompetence of system has caught up. Talent comes and go, you get a bad generation or two but when the fire stops burning it's very difficult to ignite a resurgence.

Hopefully they win at Lords and my post is made to look stupid. But even as an optimist and a guy who is always finding excuses to back long odds, I don't see it coming.

No. With Bangladesh rising, cricket can frankly still make do without a strong Pakistan since you have at least a couple competitive SC teams.

It hurts to say that, but it's a fact.

We aren't some pillar of cricket like India, Aus or England, nor do we have the ability to produce quality performances like SA.

I mean it in all honesty that Pakistan needs to take a 5 to 10 year break from cricket and then return once the country is stabilized. We are only giving our cricket legacy a bad name by continuing to produce poor performances. Our priorities are all messed up, we lack requisite professionalism to reform. We are wasting supporters time.

I mean it when I say I would rather there is no Pakistan team than a team that plays a horrible unwatchable negative brand of cricket. I don't even want the team to win because I know it will only get folks hopes up for another inevitable loss.

There's been some doozies of silly posts on this forum this year, but this one's certainly up (or down really) there.

Ideally yes, it is obviously more exciting if there are 5-6 test teams who can compete neck and neck with eachother

Of course, England,Australia,South Africa,West Indies, New Zealand, India & Pakistan, this is the OG crew of Test Cricket. We might not always get along, but these are the legacy test nations, anyone of them dies we lose a history that money can't buy.

Test cricket needs to be competitive, that means ideally 3 teams minimum fighting for the #1 spot and 4 or 5 others at least being competitive.

There will always be a minnow team or two, but no...it would be sad if Pakistan entered minnow status.

I think cricket needs a strong Pakistan as much as it needs a strong Australia, India, England, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies etc.

ICC needs a separate criteria for Test cricket and full membership.

It's pretty much ten years to the day that Pakistan were #1 in the test rankings.

I guess the question is whether this is a fallow period that will be reversed or a more terminal issue like that faced by the West Indies. However, despite their woes in international cricket, West Indian players have always had a route out that is not currently open to any Pakistani player, namely the IPL. With Indian franchises buying up sides in other leagues it is going to be harder for Pakistani players to make the big bucks on the global T20. This further isolates Pakistani cricket, which will be damaging to their performance in all formats

This is something that is obviously a big hindrance to them. I don't think cricket can afford to have a weak Pakistan, it just isn't a big enough sport globally.

It just seems pretty inconceivable they'll enter a West Indies type decline because of the vast difference in population base. Surely even a moderate decline in interest has profound consequences for the game in a region of only a few million people, which Pakistan could absorb better
