Both HTBs but Haynes averages higher both ways, averages higher in general, had tougher home pitches, and was an opener. I would say Haynes.

Their overall averages and home/away splits are so close as to make no difference for me (less than 1% overall and home, a bit over 2% away). I don't think differences that small really make any odds. One thing you neglect to mention is the relative difference in quality of the bowling they faced. Vengsarkar faced the very strong West Indies quite a bit while also never facing his own India who were pretty bad for most of his career. Haynes obviously never faced his own West Indies either. I think these two are very close and I might actually be marginally leaning Vengsarkar.

That's actually a good point, I didn't think of that.
