All rounders XI...

Dazinho

U19 12th Man
Hiya - hope we're doing well.

One to ponder...the good all rounder is something of a 'golden nugget' in cricket terms and it would be interesting to see what a team full of the best would look like.

Before starting it's important to define an 'all rounder' for the purposes of the team, so for those purposes I'll define an all rounder as the following.

1) definitely good enough to get in a good test team on their main discipline
2) good enough in their second discipline to not be considered an absolute specialist

There are of course marginal calls in this - for example I'd say someone like Malcolm Marshall would just about qualify, whereas Shane Warne or the Waugh twins would just miss. But there will be differences of opinion on this point.

The keeper should be a strong batter to continue the all-round theme.

I'm just musing so this isn't necessarily the best team, but a good one might look like:-

Chris Gayle
Sanath Jayasuria
Jacques Kallis
Gary Sobers
Keith Miller
Andy Flower (wk)
Imran Khan
Ian Botham
Shaun Pollock
Richard Hadlee
Malcolm Marshall

Probably the follow up to this is an absolute specialists XI - where the guys mentioned above would also miss out as they qualify as neither.

Thoughts appreciated as ever - thanks.

You could make pretty good South African all-rounder team:

Eddie Barlow
Trevor Goddard
Jacques Kallis
Hansie Cronje/Dave Nourse
Aubrey Faulkner
Clive Rice
Brian McMillan
Andrew Hall (wk)
Mike Procter
Shaun Pollock
Alan Kourie

Rice and Kourie played in the rebel tours, so definitely would have played tests if South Africa hadn't been banned. Hall wasn't a regular keeper by any means, but was good enough to be the backup to Boucher in ODIs at least, and ended up keeping in one match when Boucher was injured. And an honorable mention to Tony Greig, who would make it if you broadened it to not just include those who played for South Africa.

If Test only, Sinclair can come in for Kourie and Rice

He's an option, although I'm not sure how to evaluate his batting. An average in the 20s is a little on the low side compared to everyone else, but might be better than it seems on face value when the era is taken into account.

Jimmy Sinclair made the first three Test centuries for South Africa and was probably their premier batter before WW1. Likewise,he may have been thought of as still amongst their best pace bowlers even when Adcock and Heine arrived to intimidate batters in the fifties.**
He doesn't get into my ATG SA X1 but he would be in the 2nd ATG X1.
**It may well be that Krom Hendricks was South Africa's finest fast bowler but we all know why he wasn't ever allowed to show his potential greatness.

One of these things is not like the others....

Just in recent times, Watson and Symonds were better at both disciplines.

Older picks : Kelleway, Cowper, McCool, Fairfax, Reiffel, Gilmour, Archer R

Of the batsmen who bowled, but didn't take a wicket a match which might be an arbitrary definition...
Doug Walters for sure, Steve Waugh, Ryder, McCabe

If Lindwall qualifies with a batting average of 21, then Johnson, Starc, Pattinson, Harris likewise. Tony Dodemaide to throw out a random name...

Could even throw in Greg Matthews
