Absurdly Awesome Cricket Stats

Some centuries in a session stats.

Bradman accomplished this 6 times. Trumper and Hammond did it thrice.

Lara did it twice, both times in extended sessions!

Bradman (334), Hammond (336*) and Hayden (380) managed to do this twice in a single innings.

Twice have two different players done this in the same match, Phil Mead and Jack Russell at the Oval in 1921, Mead in the first innings and Russell in the second. And Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden at the WACA in 2003, both in the same session, after Hayden had also done it the day before.

Interestingly in the 1921 match, we very nearly had a third batsmen join the party with George Brown making 84 before falling (at which point Russell was on 73, with 19 more overs being bowled after that.
In FC cricket Neil Fairbrother did it three times in the same innings (and in the same day), which might be unique.

I was at The Oval on that hot, sunny Saturday in May 1990.Atherton also made a century, completely overshadowed by Fairbrother's brilliant display of course.
Yes it was a perfect pitch for batting---Ian Greig had scored 291 for Surrey on the first two days----but the little left-handed Lancashire batter gave all of we spectators a virtuoso performance.
Fairbrother's given names are Neil Harvey, after the great Australian left-hander and he,almost eerily, batted in that innings as Neil Harvey himself would have done at his peak.Feather late cuts, stroked square cuts and cover drives, effortless shots through mid-wicket and,in the last session, for a rousing cresceno, five sixes I think four of them into the pavilion, reaching his triple century by close of play.A performance from this little imp of a batter which I still vividly recall nearly thirty-six years later on a freezing-cold February night.
Neil Harvey Fairbrother---like another twinkling batter, the Australian Michael Slater, unfulfilled talent.
By the way,Fairbrother surpassed the previous highest score made at The Oval--365 scored by a 22 year-old Len Hutton over two and a half days v Australia in August 1938.

Was always sad Bradman didn’t manage it.

105 off 153 SR 68.63
115 off 152 SR 75.65
89 off 115 SR 77.39

Wild variability of overs across the 3 sessions

45, 52 and 36. Balls faced % in the sessions - 56.67, 48.72, 53.24. Clearly needed more strike hogging in the last session. Also notable for one dismissal in each session. Jackson at the start of the first, Woodfull midway through the second, and Kippax near the end of the third.

Mark Taylor also scored a century in a session during his 334* in 1998 vs Pakistan.

I'd have thought Lara would've done it in his 501* but his actual by session scores were 18, 93, 174, 133, 83.

Bradman, from what I've noticed is the ONLY batsman to have scored a century the first session of a test match,a century before lunch,a century between lunch & tea... and also between tea and the close of play.

All 4.

Hammond did before lunch, from lunch to tea and then tea to close for the trifecta.

Bradman's century in the first session of a Test match and century before lunch were the same century (Headingley 1930 as mentioned above).

Nathan Astle went from 83* to 222 in the last session at Christchurch in 2002 (v Eng).
Ben Stokes went from 32* to 135* in the last session at Headingley in the 2019 Ashes.
Even in this day and age of T20’s imo the best example of power hitting I’ve ever seen. Ball sound coming off the bat is also one of my favourites of all time.
