8 tests have been abandoned without a ball bowled in test history, 7 due to rain, one due to fog.

In Melbourne in the 70/71 Ashes, the schedulers came up with an idea to recoup the lost revenue, and so a 40 overs per side match was scheduled on the original 5th day of the test, being retrospectively recognised as the first ODI.

ODIs were also played at the abandoned matches in Dunedin in 89 (vs Pakistan) and Bourda in 90 (vs England). An unofficial ODI was also played in 98 at Dunedin (vs India).

The first two abandoned matches were both Ashes fixtures at Old Trafford, and Dunedin has also hosted 2.

Amazingly, in 1998, two matches were abandoned on the same day, the aforementioned NZ vs India and also Zimbabwe vs Pakistan in Faisalabad (due to heavy fog). The latter was criticised as premature as the fog began to clear up, but the cancellation ensured Zimbabwe’s first ever series victory.

Not sure where to post this so I'll stick it here.

Also not sure why this surprised me but it did.......Jos Buttler has just overtaken Jimmy as England's most capped player accross formats. 402 appearances for the 3 lions.
3 Lions on the shirt!
Something Something Something
30 years of hurt!

Mohammad Amir took his first Test catch in his 20th Test match, the longest gap for any fielder in history.

The second-longest wait for a maiden Test catch is held by Geoff Pullar of England. He went 17 Tests before taking his first catch. The next entry is Glenn McGrath, who had to wait 16 matches for his first catch as a fielder.

Peter Siddle holds the record for the most Tests played without taking a catch, having played 25 Tests without one. Chuck Fleetwood Smith, who played 10 test matches in his career, never took a single catch in test cricket.

Duleep Mendis (105 and 105 against India in 1982) and Misbah-ul-Haq (101 and 101* against Australia in 2014) are the only two players in Test cricket history to have scored identical triple-figure scores in both innings of the same match.

Here is the list of some other instances of identical scores in both innings along with these two:

Is Border the closest to doing this out of 150+ scores?

Is Border the closest to doing this out of 150+ scores?
Yeah. And kind of expected, as the instance of 150+ in both innings only happened twice in Test cricket.

John Langridge came close in FC cricket, with two 146's in both innings against Derbyshire.

Wow. That’s gotta be close to a record for bowlers. 9 in the first innings and 10 in the second by Pakistan? I know we’ve had innings where teams use 11 bowlers but usually that sort of thing only happens in one of the innings.

And the one to get Border was the one who bowled the fewest. In his only test.

Another most bowlers fun one.

Most different bowlers used in a test match - 20 in this England vs SA draw

A match with an earlier walking controversy, in England’s second innings (chasing 400+ with what turned out to be just 8 overs to play), South Africa sent out the 4 non keepers who had not bowled in the first innings to bowl. Quite a lovely bit of trolling from Goddard.

Checking Statsguru I can only see one other match where a team used 9 bowlers in both innings: WI v NZ at Trinidad in 1972.
Every time a team used all 11 in an innings, that was the only innings they bowled, so (unless I'm missing something) 19 is the record.

So far, the 2020’s are the first decade since the 1920’s where #4 batsmen in tests average under 40.

Record highs for each batting position

Opener - 43.83 (1940’s)
3 - 51.25 (1930’s)
4 - 53.37 (1940’s)
5 - 41.46 (2010’s)
6 - 35.20 (1980’s)
7 - 32.07 (1920’s)
8 - 23.16 (2000’s)
9 - 26.71 (1870’s)
10 - 15.45 (1920’s)
11 - 11.45 (1890’s)

#9 is obviously sample size but #11 for the 1890’s is pretty impressive. Whats even more crazy is that the 1880’s was second on the list.

Ambrose and Walsh got me thinking about duos. So the top 5 duos by matches played together.

Tendulkar/Dravid (146)
Anderson/Broad (138)
Kallis/Boucher (137)
Dravid/Laxman (132)
Cook/Anderson (130)

Most consecutive tests played by a duo is 86, with Hayden and Gilchrist, followed by Gavaskar and Viswanath with 69.

Ganguly played 113 tests, all of which involved Dravid. Kirmani played all 88 of his tests with Gavaskar.

Gooch played with a record 113 different teammates in his 118 tests, just beating out Woolley with 111 teammates in 64 tests.

Some centuries in a session stats.

Bradman accomplished this 6 times. Trumper and Hammond did it thrice.

Lara did it twice, both times in extended sessions!

Bradman (334), Hammond (336*) and Hayden (380) managed to do this twice in a single innings.

Twice have two different players done this in the same match, Phil Mead and Jack Russell at the Oval in 1921, Mead in the first innings and Russell in the second. And Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden at the WACA in 2003, both in the same session, after Hayden had also done it the day before.

Interestingly in the 1921 match, we very nearly had a third batsmen join the party with George Brown making 84 before falling (at which point Russell was on 73, with 19 more overs being bowled after that.
