2025-26 New Zealand domestic season

Frankly I think this warrants test selection for Ireland and England as the 5th pacer, however green the pitches have been. This isn't a fluke from an unremarkable domestic trundler like Keene's debut season.
Except that NZ doesn't have a great track record of selecting young bowlers out of domestic cricket – they're either injured in short order or turn out to be not very good.

There's also the question of which five you would drop from the following: Henry, O'Rourke, Jamieson, Duffy, Sears, Foulkes, Rae, Tickner, Smith and Fisher. Certainly there are one or two obvious candidates, but five is a mite tricky.

O'Connor looks to have potential, but there's nothing much to be gained by rushing him.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing

Henry and O'Rourke are locks, as is Jamieson on reputation and record but imo I fear we've seen the best of him at this level.

Then you'd think it's Duffy. You can't not include him after the home summer, but I also fear he'll fare overseas much like he did in the T20 world cup once let out of NZ shores, but I'm hoping to be proved wrong because I love the Duffman.

Foulkes should be left out. Fisher would be a risk given his injuries, Rae was a stop gap and then there's Nathan Smith. A sort of heir apparent who has done ok with his chances but hasn't really cemented them. A bowling Will Young if you will. He's got batting in his favour but not much else. It's a shame, because I am a fan. Sears is an unknown quantity. Has played one test and hard to tell where he is in the long format pecking order.

But yeah, O'Connor should see if he can pick up some club cricket in England and be on call when one of our quick inevitably breaks down. Entirely possible they may name a slightly different squad for Ireland but I feel like that will be treated as a warm up for the England series, so doubt there will be much different.mind you, given it's four tests in England, I wouldn't say 6 seamers in a squad of 18 isn't out of this realm - heck neither is 7. Imagine they won't give Patel a gig and Santner, Phillips and Ravindra will fulfill any spinners duties.

Assuming fitness, I bet NZC will go with a squad like:

Latham
Conway
Williamson
Ravindra
Mitchell
Phillips
Blundell+
Henry
Jamieson
Duffy
O'Rourke

Santner
Smith
Hay+
Young
Nicholls

The other two spots I genuinely don't know. Possibly Sears if he's considered a more exciting prospect, and more "polished" than Fisher. Though given it's England they may think Foulkes will be a handful.

And then maybe another backing back up in Mariu or Heaphy if they don't take Patel. Conservative pick would be Kelly. The A tour to Sri Lanka should give us a bit more of a clue though.

The other issue is the IPL re the squad.

The test vs Ireland is 27-30 May (4 days), while the IPL doesn't finish until 31 May:

Qualifier 1 - 26 May
Eliminator - 27 May
Qualifier 2 - 29 May
Final - 31 May

It might be a makeshift side to face the Irish, rather than a full strength one getting prep for England.

At least the PSL will be well finished (3 May).

Duffy was the test player of the year and the Sir Richard Hadlee Medal winner, so he is a lock for the tour, and the test 11. The powers that be won’t be jettisoning him from the penthouse to the outhouse. Not sure about ‘he’s no good overseas’ - pitch and atmospheric conditions in Ireland and England for red ball cricket are as different from Indian conditions for white ball cricket as night is from day.

Discards from names mentioned above are N Smith, Rae, Foulkes, Fisher.
We need a left armer. O’Connor should tour the British Isles.

hmm iirc english summer pitches for test matches in the last few years have been batting paradises right? flat as all hell?

think a guy in the foulkes mould will get absolutely destroyed there

Nice to see Mariu doing his twice a season daddy hundred thing.

Meanwhile, O'Connor looking distinctly less menacing as the deck dries and flattens out v Wellington. Talks of intl call-ups very premature imo.

There’s plenty of bowlers who’ve started to look very ordinary once pitches flatten out. Some of the greats are in that category: masterful when the ball is seaming early doors, or swinging when conditions suit….and pretty much cannon fodder on day 2 and 3 on a flat one under a cloudless sky.

That still leaves Henry, O'Rourke, Jamieson, Duffy, Sears, Tickner and O'Connor. 7 seamers isn't impossible, but it seems a bit of a luxury. And I'm doubtful O'Connor, on the basis of a few FC games, would, or should, go ahead of Foulkes.

Dukes for Foulkes. Even while you sleep, he will find Root plumb in front on best behaviour, nicking ****s out thanks to Mother Nature, every county wants to sign Zak Foulkes.
