2025-26 New Zealand domestic season

Oh yeah, this commentary tab (even with no quirk and colour to the comms) will help me get straight to the quick short balls, I'm going to quite like that feature.

A bit of a new Finn Allen just in terms of background, Marco Alpe. Turned 18 in July, a good performer for St Kentigerns in very early teens and then became Auckland Grammar captain, bats top-order and wicket-keeps. His dad made his dough in the tourism vehicle hiring business I think (Maui, Jucy, etc.).

There's an Aryan Mann going ballistic out there! 85* off 69.

Just as well it's not in Melbourne, the police choppers would be circling.

"A lot to like": NZ Cricket in talks about joining Australian Big Bash league

I'll be honest. I actually find this prospect scary. There's not a lot to like about taking a sledgehammer to the entire domestic structure to accommodate both the BBL & WBBL, especially not if there's just one team in each.

If it were to happen, he says it wouldn’t be at the expense of Super Smash, as it’s important to have a strong domestic competition in New Zealand as well.
Weenink is in La-la-land if he honestly believes that. You're either;
  1. Reducing SS to a 2nd XI comp,
  2. Moving to November or February & giving up on hope of crowds
  3. Splitting up the men's & women's comps, to put the WSS I don't know where, between the WBBL & WPL.
The scariest part is that it feels like NZC is softly giving up on Super Smash. This is the last season on the Spark/TVNZ deal & Sky doesn't want it. It wouldn't surprise me if Sky is supportive of this - it's in their interest to be, in which case it's another reason for me to hate Sky.

Stronger back-foot play is clearly what we're starting to see the Curtis Heaphys and Rhys Marius coming through in dire need of, so I'm all for finally acknowledging that the Super Smash is dorky and overly friendly Ed Sheeran or Zak Foulkes kind of fare.

Interesting perhaps NZ cricket needs to move with the times

Presumably neither of the final two U19 camp matches will take place due to the the weather in the Christchurch area today and tomorrow. Maybe at best today they get a partial match?

I don't know what they do in the camp on the days in between games. But as they were due to have 2 back to back games today and tomorrow, I can presume moving a game to yesterday (back to back with a match the day before) wouldn't break any loading protocols?

But, it is good to know that the most promising players in the country are gathered together under the tutelage of development offices too lazy to look at a forecast and re-jig a schedule and try to get the most out of their time together. It is this kind of attention to detail that inspires real confidence.

"Sorry boys, my bad, looks like we will now be doing 3 days in a row in the covered nets, gym, and lecture theater"

Or to paraphrase, am I annoyed there is no livestream cricket today? Yes.

Selling out to franchise owners who don't give a rats about NZ cricket & just want easy player pipelines to SA20 & ILT20 while dumping their 3rd rate players here & expecting NZ fans to be excited for them to grace these shores;

Or

Selling out to a board that has a long history of snubbing New Zealand, treats NZ as a minor annoyance, & despite all the friendly big brother rhetoric doesn't give a damn unless it suits them

Forgive me if I see the difference as like being punched or kicked to death, & prefer to try for a 3rd option, even if it's hard.

It would be one thing if there were 2 NZ teams, but only one? Hard pass. It's certainly not worth throwing away what we've got. For me, an admittedly ardent opponent, 2 teams & a 20% ownership stake is a bare minimum to even entertain the idea.

I remember the first time I ever saw any televised U19 cricket, the 2008 U19 world cup, and the batters really lacked power.

OK, it was a really tough batting tournament. In Malaysia, with humidity and swing off the scales, and slightly dodgy associate nation pitches. But I remember they really struggled to hit the fence.

Roll forward to the present day, and on the stream from Lincoln I just watched a guy in the U19s trials toe-end a pull aimed at wide mid-wicket go for 6 over long off (on the full-sized Sutcliffe oval) ... just like the adults.

Yeah ... cricket is getting a bit ****.

Does he get his scoops away this cleanly as standard practice, Bogue? Interesting talent to say the least. He and Mason Clarke are longtime sparring partners.

Having a listen to Sumo & Izzy. Sumo being conflict-of-interested to the max aside, it sounds interesting so far.

Izzy's Monster Bash is a bit oddball, but I do believe that a home & away series between the SS & BBL champions has potential, but that also requires NZC & CA to work together. Technically, we got a champions' match in Guyana this year, & the Stags won that one (admittedly, HH had a lot of guys unavailable while the Stags had all hands on deck; I think Will Young was deliberately not selected for the Zimbabwe T20s so he could attend this).
