2025–26 Australian Domestic Season

So within 3 days Green has been marked for #7 in ODI for the World cup as the only power hitter who can do it, while now being marked as next Test Opener.

He really is the once in a generation talent that is the savior of Aussie cricket. Pity his actual record is nothing like the hype

What is it with Australia always building up the batting pace allrounder to be a God. Shane Watson, Mitchell Marsh, Cameron Green all very similar underwhelming records for the hype

Tbf I don't think we hyped Watson and I can remember his bowling came on later than his batting. The screwing around of Green is getting scandalous and it would be good if we just settled him in the middle order and get overs out of him whenever we can.

Nah, being a Qlder I know Watson was hyped from very early days as the bat that could bowl 140+ kph

I can remember him bowling medium pacers and was no more than a bitser as a bowler. I then saw him play a white ball game where he hit 140k for the first time and judging by the look on his face he was stoked and couldn't believe it. He became an AR and I can't recall the hype over him as claimed.

You remember wrong, Watson was hyped massively and was a genuine all-arounder, bowling 140kph often. He bowled less and less as he got older, mostly because of injury but even when he did bowl he became more of a medium pacer

Yes but you thought Wade was better than Travis. What if you memory is as bad as your judgment? Something for you to reflect on there.

Watto was massively hyped as a young domestic player (not least by me lol).

He was an ATG ODI player and had a reasonable enough Test career too so it's not exactly a Mitch Marsh or Moises Henriques level disappointment, but bigger things were definitely expected him in Tests.

For good reason tbf. He was averaging high 40s with the bat in the shield and beating batsmen for pace with the ball.

Maybe a good thing he didn't kick on early in his career or we never would have seen Andrew Symonds the Test cricketer

The reason he didn't play more earlier was mostly because of injury. He was totally made of glass when he tried to bowl gas early on so spent half the time out of injured and 25% of the time playing as a batsman alone. When Michael Clarke debuted he very nearly did in his place (he'd outperformed him in Shield cricket but only intermittedly).

Before he made his Test debut he played some games batting 8 in the ODI side and bowling a full quota as a "bowling allrounder", so his bowling wasn't just a late add on, it was something he was hyped up for but only fit enough to do 25% of the time.

a real sliding doors moment is that watson was supposed to play in the 2006-07 ashes and then he got injured and then clarke scored 2 tons in the first 3 matches to bed down his spot for the rest of his career (this also led to Symonds getting called-up when Martyn raged-quit after the 2nd test)

my favourite watson thing is Lehmann coming in for the 2013 Ashes and moving Watson back to opening and causing a bunch of chaos and then by the end of the ODs after the Ashes, he wasn't even opening in OD cricket anymore which no-one suggested happen!

Lol; he wasn't beating anyone for pace even when he got quicker. Next thing it'll get posted that he was Shaun Tait for speed. Seems like he's getting hyped post career more than during it.

You seem to be the only one that doesnt know Watto bowled 140k when he first started
"He’d burst onto the scene as a baby-faced 21-year-old, with a reputation for bowling at 140 clicks, having a textbook batting technique, and hitting a long ball."

That's another thing, he was a relatively stodgy bat earlier on. Always had the ability to go big but his first couple of 50+ scores in ODIs were quite slow. Bit of a difference from where he ended up

Tbf this doesn't prove anything really. He'd be more accurate if he mentioned he had an injury riddled career and when he became fitter he was able to bowl faster. Much easier and lazier to say he always bowled at his peak.
