Samuels replaces Sarwan

Marlon Samuels has been called up by the West Indies to replace their injured skipper Ramnaresh Sarwan.

Samuels was a surprise omission for the Test leg of the tour. He has become a fixture in the ODI side and many expected him to take Brian Lara’s spot in the middle order.

Samuels has played 23 Tests to date, without ever really managing to nail down a spot in the side with an average of just over 28, with a single century to his name, against India.

He replaces Sarwan who damaged his shoulder in the field during their innings defeat at Headingley. With Sarwan absent, Daren Ganga will lead the side, as he did for the latter part of the Headingley Test.

Samuels will join the squad in time to be available for the next Test, which starts at Old Trafford on June 7. The final Test, at Chester-le-Street, begins on June 15.
