NZ can win Cup – Fleming

New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming is confident his side is in with a strong chance of taking out this year’s World Cup in the West Indies.

Fleming, captaining New Zealand in a World Cup for the third time and no stranger to disappointment in the latter stages of the tournament, believes the team is capable of not only making the final for the first time in their history but also bringing the Cup back home.

The 34 year-old is confident his team, unbeaten so far in the tournament, will make the semi-finals and considers the fact that from that point they are only two wins away from winning the tournament “an exciting prospect but a scary one.”

According to Fleming the team are peaking at the right time and despite injury setbacks early in the tournament they “are getting back to full fitness at the right time.”

Despite his confidence in his side’s ability to win the tournament, Fleming admits the next three games will be tough matches against “three top sides” in Sri Lanka, South Africa and Cup favourites Australia.

But with nine wins in a row under their belts, it’s a case of so far, so good, and New Zealand are among the leading contenders on the strength of their clinical performances to date.

The first of the tough matches is on Wednesday, when they take on Sri Lanka in Grenada.
